The All Japan Jitsugyo Judo Team Tournament was held in early June at the Nagahama Ika Twin Arena in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. This tournament has taken place for more than 70 years with 110 athletes competing in 2024. This year, Asahi Kasei Judo Team sent 14 judoka to participate in the competition. This event marked a significant milestone as Asahi Kasei's 20th championship win. In a pre-interview, coach Yuya Yoshida said, "I would be most happy if I could create a moment that moves the hearts of the people involved in judo and the Asahi Kasei Group through the battles of the Asahi Kasei Judo Team." We are confident that all of us at Asahi Kasei are moved by the dedication and perseverance of our athletes in this year's tournament and those to come. We are excited to announce that Asahi Kasei began selling a membrane system to produce WFI (water for injection), a type of sterile water that is used for the preparation of injections. The membrane system was developed as an alternative to the conventional distillation processes for producing WFI by leveraging system design and development capabilities of Microza™ hollow-fiber membrane for water treatment and filtration of liquid products. By reducing the need to generate steam, this system enables lower CO2 emissions and lower costs in the production of WFI. By facilitating the transition from traditional distillation processes to a membrane filtration process, we expect the new system to allow its customers to reduce CO2 emissions while producing a stable supply of safer WFI for the pharmaceutical industry. We are thrilled to share that Crystal IS, an Asahi Kasei company, today announced the successful serial production of 100 mm diameter single-crystal aluminum nitride (AlN) substrates with 99% usable area, based on current requirements for UVC LEDs, with manufacturing to take place in the United States. The ultra-wide bandgap and high thermal conductivity of AlN help improve device reliability and performance in UVC LEDs, next-generation RF, and power devices. This achievement follows the company’s announcement of the first-ever recorded 100 mm diameter in August of last year, which won the Grand Prize in the category of Electronic Materials for Semiconductors in the 2024 Semiconductor of the Year Awards. We are excited to share the launch of the CQ36, a new line of integrated circuits (ICs) offering advanced capabilities in a more compact package than previous solutions by Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM). The CQ36 series of digital output coreless current sensor ICs is designed to meet the needs of the growing robotics market. This series features a built-in Delta-Sigma (ΔΣ) modulator, enabling the IC to replace traditional shunt resistors and isolated analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) in a single package. AKM will exhibit the new line at PCIM Europe 2024, June 11-13, at the Nuremberg Exhibition Centre, in booth Hall 7-502. We are thrilled to share our latest technological achievement with innovative electrolyte, the proof of concept (POC) of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) using its proprietary high ionic conductive electrolyte. This technological breakthrough allows for increased power output by LIBs, even at low-temperature, and improved durability at high temperatures. Furthermore, this technology can contribute to lower cost and smaller size of battery packs, further raising the energy density. Masami Takenaka, head of Asahi Kasei's hydrogen business, joined as a panelist at the Japan Energy Summit held today at Tokyo Big Sight. During the panel discussion, various perspectives were shared by panelists from diverse backgrounds, including suppliers, energy companies, and port authorities, focusing on the future prospects and challenges of realizing the entire hydrogen supply chain. To expand the new energy source of a hydrogen society, it is essential not only to reduce equipment costs but also to establish reliability and safety. “Wirtschaftstag Japan” took place on May 27 in Düsseldorf. Since its inception in 2002, it has grown into one of the biggest economic conferences for German and Japanese companies, as well as a great place to celebrate the partnership and friendship between the two countries.   This year's topic was "Open Innovation for a Better Future."   In his presentation, Asahi Kasei Europe’s Naoki Matsuoka talked about Asahi Kasei's innovation strategy and two key technologies that have the potential to become game changers in their respective industries: an alkaline water electrolysis system for the large-scale production of green hydrogen, and an innovative electrolyte that enhances the power output and service lifetime of lithium-ion batteries in cold and hot environments.
