  • As Berlin Fashion Week draws to a close, here’s a throwback to our exhibition "Architecture x Fashion – A Dialogue," curated in collaboration with the fashion label ICICLE. It was shown in Shanghai in 2018 and in Hamburg in 2019. For more than a decade, gmp has enjoyed a close collaboration with ICICLE. The fashion label’s designers were inspired by the architecture of the buildings designed by gmp for ICICLE in China, to create a unique fashion collection. The exhibition juxtaposed these designs with the architecture in large-format photographs, highlighting many similarities in concept, structure, and form. The design philosophies of gmp and ICICLE are very similar: On different scales, both seek timeless, minimalist designs with strong silhouettes. Both companies are committed to developing and using sustainable materials and production methods in order to use natural resources responsibly. The result of this collaboration is a series of elegant boutiques, showrooms, and modern production facilities that reflect the values of both ICICLE and gmp. Over the coming days, we will be sharing some of these projects that highlight the exciting synergy between fashion and architecture. Stay tuned!   For more information on architecture and fashion, visit: www.gmp.de/fashion   © Marcus Bredt © ICICLE   #gmp #gmpArchitekten #gmpNews #BuildingInHistoricContext #HistoricContext #BauenImBestand #Umbau #retail #fashion #berlinfashionweek #throwbackthursday

  • Once a year, our offices from Hamburg, Berlin, and Aachen come together to celebrate one of the most important things for gmp: us, the team! 🥂 We were happy that also colleagues from our Chinese offices were able to join us, as well! This year's summer party was extra special as we celebrated in the recently reopened Hyparschale in Magdeburg, meticulously restored and converted by us. Our design objective was to breathe new life into the Hyparschale, listed as a historic monument since 1998, transforming it into a multifunctional event and exhibition venue. And can you believe? We were the first ones to celebrate and use the new Hyparschale! A huge thank you to the City of #Magdeburg and our project partners for making this special party possible. And a heartfelt thank you to all our teams for coming and making this party so unique! We cannot wait for next year’s summer party! 🎪 🎊 🪩 #gmp #gmpArchitekten #gmpNews #summerparty #gmpnews #team #magdeburg #hyparschale © gmp

  • A match interruption due to heavy rain? The national teams of Portgual and Slovenia certainly don't have to worry about that tonight. They will meet in the quarterfinals at Frankfurt's Deutsche Bank Park Stadium - and can rely on dry playing conditions. For the 2006 World Cup, gmp Architekten equipped the stadium with a roofing system, that is quicky adaptable to changing weather conditions. The folding roof is attached to a membrane in the middle of a cable structure. The material-saving principle of this "gather-up roof" was developed by schlaich bergermann partner. Rainwater is extracted using a compressed air process. Similar to a spoke-wheel, a steel element forms the outer compressive ring, the hub. Two tension rings are positioned at the inner roof edge and kept apart by struts. The connections between tension and compressive rings consist of radial cables, which together with six suspended ropes form the rope girders. Additional radial cables are positioned between the tension rings and the central knot. Located centrally above the pitch a multimedia cube is suspended from this central knot, which simultaneously houses the inner roof membrane. The cylindrical drum protects the folded-up membrane and opens and closes like a blossom, when the roof is extended. In light of this, nobody will be left out in the rain tonight if another spectacular weather situation occurs! • Spotlight on the RheinEnergie Stadium in Cologne! It will be the venue for the European Championship Round of 16 match between Spain and Georgia at 9pm today. In 2001, our office won the competition to build this stadium. The city of Cologne had applied to host the 2006 World Cup. A prerequisite for this was a stadium that met FIFA’s criteria. The old Müngersdorfer Stadium was therefore gradually demolished and rebuilt according to gmp’s plans – without interrupting the playing season. The new RheinEnergie Stadium was opened after just two years of construction, and the city of Cologne hosted five World Cup matches, becoming part of the “Sommermärchen” (summer fairytale). With its steeply rising stands, the arena is considered one of the most atmospheric stadiums in Germany and has gained cult status as a football venue. Its four distinctive, illuminated steel towers have become landmarks of the city of Cologne. The stadium holds around 45,000 fans and is a versatile venue for concerts and other events – legends such as Queen and the Rolling Stones have performed here. In 2005, the new RheinEnergie Stadium was awarded the bronze medal by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as one of the world’s best sports venues. This year, the stadium celebrates its 20th anniversary - congratulations and best wishes for a great football match tonight! © Photos: Marcus Bredt © Drawings: gmp Architekten #gmp #gmparchitects #gmpnews #Rheinenergiestadion #Cologne #EURO2024 #sport #architecture

  • From 1980 until 1998 the Tempodrom as an unconventional cultural institution provided space for 3,500 people in two big tops. The nowadays outstanding structural feature is the 37 m high tent-like roof construction made from concrete above the Large Arena, with daylight entering through the glazed opening in its zenith. The symbolic roof form is a constructive interpretation of the phenomenon, which has characterized the identity of the Tempodrom in the past – the experience of the tent atmosphere. In the Liquidrom natural materials are used primarily. The floors and walls in the wet and bathing areas are clad with a greenish-grey natural stone; the walls of all other rooms are finished with refined fair-faced concrete. The wall cladding is made from untreated red cedar; the ceilings are suspended and dark coated. © Photos: Marcus Bredt © Model Photos: Heiner Leiska © Drawings: gmp Architekten #gmp #gmparchitects #gmpnews #Tempodrom #Liquidrom #Berlin #Culture #Architectur

🎉 Happy 25th Birthday to the Weimarhalle! 🎉 Standing tall with its bright western facade, the Weimarhalle forms a stunning boundary to the wide parkland by the River Ilm in Weimar. Designed to be transparent and open, the building offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and a glimpse into its elegant interior. Inside, the concert auditorium shines as an independent element. The large hall is versatile, with movable partitions on the first and second floors that can transform the space to suit various events. The wooden structure and bright atmosphere make it a dynamic venue for any occasion. Surrounding the auditorium are spacious foyers with glass facades that seamlessly blend the outdoors with the indoors. The new design maintains the charm of the original hall, with only minor modern updates. A seminar building, added beyond the southern courtyard, offers additional space and can be used independently. Serpentine ramps connect both forecourts with the park, creating a harmonious flow between the Weimarhalle and its natural surroundings. Here's to 25 years of architectural beauty, cultural events, and unforgettable moments at the Weimarhalle! 🥂 For more information on the project, visit https://lnkd.in/evSFJ8qk Photos © Marcus Bredt Drawings & Model © gmp #gmp #gmparchitects #gmpnews #Weimarhalle #25Years #Architecture #Anniversary #Weimar #CulturalVenue #EventSpace

  • We are thrilled to share the successful reopening of the Hyparschale in Magdeburg, an iconic structure originally built in 1969 by renowned structural engineer Ulrich Müther 🎉✨ After standing vacant for over twenty years, this architectural gem has been meticulously restored and converted by gmp; under the commission of the authorities of the state capital of Magdeburg. The extensive renovation project spanned from 2019 to 2024. Our design objective was to breathe new life into the Hyparschale, listed as a historic monument since 1998, transforming it into a multifunctional event and exhibition venue. A key focus was enhancing the interior ambiance of the distinctive shell roof. The restoration efforts included reinforcing and increasing the loadbearing capacity of the roof using advanced carbon concrete technology. Check out the reel from our opening ceremony and witness the stunning transformation of this iconic structure. 🌟 More information on this project can be found on our website www.gmp.de/hyparschale #gmp #gmpArchitects #gmpNews #Hyparschale #Magdeburg #Architecture #Restoration #Innovation #EventVenue #ExhibitionSpace #GrandReopening #StructuralEngineering #UlrichMüther #CarbonConcrete #HistoricPreservation   © gmp Architektenkammer Sachsen-Anhalt

It is open – again! The Hyparschale Magdeburg was built in 1969 to a design by Ulrich Müther and stood vacant for over twenty years. Now, its reopening was celebrated on June 20, 2024. We are incredibly proud of the results and are thrilled to have been part of bringing the Hyparschale back to life as a vibrant cultural and event hub for the community. This project exemplifies the importance of preserving architectural heritage while adapting it to meet contemporary needs. The journey from 2019 to 2024 was filled with challenges and triumphs. Our team worked meticulously to ensure that every aspect of the restoration honored Ulrich Müther's original vision while integrating modern functionalities and sustainable practices. From reopening the roof lights to creating dynamic interior spaces, every detail was carefully considered to enhance the experience and celebrate the architectural marvel that is the Hyparschale. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the City of #Magdeburg, our project partners, all the craftsmen and engineers whose dedication and expertise made this restoration possible. It has been an honor to contribute to the legacy of this iconic structure and to see it reborn as a center for creativity and innovation. Close Up: The Suzhou Olympic Sportscenter consists of four buildings: Stadium, natatorium, sports hall, and hotel tower with shopping center. They are embedded in a sixty-hectare public park. Twelve-meter-high podiums form the bases of all four buildings. A horizontal pattern of natural stone and aluminum panels dominates the facades; cold-bent glass panels make the flowing shape of the façade possible. For the forst time in China, the roofs of the sport facilities are designed as single-layer cable net structures. The hyperbolic paraboloid shells rest on V-shaped supports. The Suzhou Olympic Sportscenter was completed in 2018 in cooperation with WES LandschaftsArchitektur.
