Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR): Europe's Path to a Trillion-Euro Industry CDR could become a game-changer in addressing climate change! The recent Boston Consulting Group (BCG) study with Deutscher Verband für negative Emissionen e.V. (DVNE) “Carbon Dioxide Removal: Europe and Germany's Role in Catalyzing a Trillion-Euro Industry” explores the transformative impact #CDR could have on achieving our climate goals while fostering economic growth. 🌿 The key role of CDR in achieving net zero: Beyond inevitable reduction measures, CDR is an essential part of our ambition to keep the goal of the Paris Agreement within reach by compensating for residual emissions from hard-to-abate sectors like cement, steel, or chemicals or emissions we have historically emitted. 📈 Economic boom: CDR's economic potential could reach €470-940B annually by 2050 – this is at par with today’s global airline industry. Europe's (Germany's) CDR industry could reach €220B (€70B) per year by then, driven especially by technological advancements and economies of scale. 👷♂️ Job potential: The European (German) CDR industry could create up to 670K (190K) jobs. 🌍 Europe paves the way: With its tech expertise and climate policies, Europe, especially Germany, is set to have a significant impact on the CDR market. However, bold actions from policymakers, the CDR industry, CDR buyers, and investors are necessary to unlock CDR’s full potential. Today’s article in the Handelsblatt highlights the key findings of the study. 💥🪨 Paving the way for Enhanced Weathering (#EW) in the European Union 🪨💥 On Tuesday, the Enhanced Weathering Alliance (EWA) held its inaugural assembly in Brussels, meeting with policy makers, NGOs, and - crucially - with each other. 🎯 Our objective is clear: establish EW as one of the most viable paths to reach net-zero in Europe (and beyond). How? Primarily by getting the European Commission to prioritise the development of an EW methodology within the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (#CRCF), ideally starting in 2024 and not late 2025. Why? Here's a reminder on just how awesome EW is: 😯 In 2023, EW removed 30,000t of CO2. EWA members alone deployed rock that will sequester 100Kt in 2023 and aim to remove up to 2.5Mt by 2026. 💸 EW has a clear path to $100/t. Currently, prices are inflated given the massive investments into monitoring, reporting, and verification (#MRV). Once we feel comfortable moving to model-based MRV, costs will drop massively. 🚜 EW can replace lime, a well-established process used by farmers to manage pH levels (30Mt/year in the U.S. alone), providing farmers with a potential revenue stream and a much-needed path for agriculture to reach net-zero. 📈 EW’s scaleability is huge, given it builds on the foundations of one of the world’s largest industries: mining, which produces almost 9Gt (!!!) of tailings annually, much of which can be used for EW. 🔒 EW is permanent for tens of thousands of years. 🤝 Intrigued? Get in touch with us today and join the 17 companies that have already teamed up to drive the scale-up of enhanced weathering. 😍 On a personal note, this is a huge moment of pride for me: Carbonfuture has been trying to mobilise the EW community for a long time. A year ago, I teamed up with Adam Wolf (Eion) and Matthew Clarkson, PhD (InPlanet) alongside Antonio Astolfi and Julian Jacobitz (FGS Global) to increase the momentum. Then earlier this year we were finally able to launch Enhanced Weathering Alliance (EWA). 🙏 Thank you to all the members who joined us on Tuesday: Hara Wang Rachel S. Isabella Corpora Charlie Hendry-Smith, Tony Oehm, Jonte Boysen, Silyan Ivanov, Simon Manley, Sam Davies, Eliot Booth, as well as all the EWA members who were with us in spirit. 🔗 Want to find out more about the potential of EW for climate policy? Check out this excellent EW Policy Primer by the Carbon Business Council: https://lnkd.in/dqPdNVX3 🤘 Time to rock! #carbonremoval #enhancedweathering #netzero

'The time for corporate action on carbon removal is now.' That was one of the key messages from our second annual Carbon Removal Summit, organized in partnership with Reuters Events, where we brought together corporate sustainability leaders with who's who in the CDR industry. Here are the key takeaways from the event: 1️⃣ Get started today. Investing in CDR now can secure supply and pricing over the coming years, prepare your organization for future regulations, and build your brand and reputation. Meaningful action today creates real, long-term impact, both within your organization and for the industry as a whole. 2️⃣ Trust was a hot topic throughout the Summit. Companies need to be able to #trust their carbon removal investments. The digital trust infrastructure —standards, digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (#MRV), and insurance— provides necessary #transparency on credit quality and de-risks investments. Businesses can leverage this infrastructure to make informed investment decisions without needing in-house scientific expertise or extensive resources. 3️⃣ Scaling the carbon removal industry requires the innovation, implementation, and scaling of a diverse range of carbon removal technologies, and we are seeing exciting progress as technologies and projects begin to come online all over the world, from BECCS in Scandinavia to DAC in Kenya. 4️⃣ CDR policy is moving forward at a remarkable rate. We expect to see a compliance market join the purely voluntary market soon as momentum in CDR policy increases across Europe. This means action now can prepare your organization for regulations ahead, and derisk corporate engagement further. 5️⃣ Innovations in buyer agreements are helping reduce costs and securing attractive pricing on carbon removal now. Multi-year agreements, framework arrangements, and buyer clubs can help organizations get the benefits of carbon removal more cheaply than ever before. And we were thrilled to be able to announce our groundbreaking 7-year contract with Swiss Re to supply a minimum of 70,000 tonnes of biochar carbon removal (#BCR) credits, providing access to multiple high-quality carbon removal projects under a single contract, starting with 70,000 tonnes of BCR credits from the key supply partner Exomad Green! ➡️ Learn more about this partnership here: https://lnkd.in/e52A6Hvu We want to thank the incredible speakers, our CDR Innovation Showcase sponsors, Reuters Events, and the over 100 corporate sustainability leaders and leading experts in CDR who attended this year’s Carbonfuture Carbon Removal Summit. It was an incredible opportunity to come together, share innovative ideas and solutions, and drive action. We can’t wait for the next one! #carbonremoval #climateaction #cdr #netzero #CarbonfutureCDRSummit24

🌍 Carbonfuture’s Carbon Removal Summit 2024 started off hot this morning with the announcement of our agreement with Swiss Re and Exomad Green, followed by our two keynote speakers!    📈 First, we heard from Emma Parry, McKinsey & Company’s Leader of Strategy & Corporate Finance Practice in the UK. She’s the co-author of last year’s report detailing the urgency of scaling carbon removal to meet our climate goals and the trillion-dollar potential of the carbon removal industry. She shared her thoughts on how corporate leaders can meet their net-zero targets and fulfill the long-term potential of the CDR industry, as laid out in the McKinsey report.   🚀 Next, we welcomed Mischa Repmann, Ph.D., Senior Sustainability Risk Manager for Swiss Re to the stage. As a leader in the reinsurance industry, Swiss Re recognizes the importance of carbon removal in addressing historical and hard-to-abate emissions. Mischa took the opportunity to share why Swiss Re is investing in CDR as part of their net-zero strategy and urged other sustainability leaders to take action now.     A big thank you to both Emma and Mischa for sharing their insights and expertise!    Be sure to stay right here for more updates from our panel discussions this morning!    #carbonremoval #climateaction #cdr #netzero #CarbonfutureCDRSummit24
