🌍🌱One key takeaway from the State of the Voluntary Carbon Market 2024 report by Ecosystem Marketplace : ◾ Compared to 2022, credit issuances decreased by 93 MtCO2e in 2023, while retirements saw a slight uptick of 2.6 MtCO2e. This indicates a tightening in the surplus supply of carbon credits, though it remains substantial. ◾ A deeper dive reveals some interesting trends: ▫ The largest declines in issuances were seen in Chemical Processes/Industrial Manufacturing and Energy Efficiency/Fuel Switching sectors. ▫ On the flip side, issuances for Household/Community Devices more than doubled, increasing by 31 MtCO2e. ▫ Similarly, Transportation credits saw a rise, reflecting the growth in registered projects in 2022. ◾ Retirement trends also offer interesting insights: ▫ Significant growth in retirements was noted in Forestry and Land Use, as well as Chemical Processes/Industrial Manufacturing. ▫ Meanwhile, retirements for Renewable Energy, Waste Disposal, and Transportation credits have decreased. This shift suggests buyers are increasingly favoring projects with clear carbon removal and emission reduction benefits, moving away from those with weaker additionality. Overall, total annual credit retirements have stabilized around 170 MtCO2e over the past three years, signaling steady fundamental demand from end users. 🌿 Enhancing Nature-Based Solutions Uptake Through Standardisation: NetworkNature EU and HSbooster.eu join Forces 🌱🌊 Today was a significant step forward as #NetworkNature and #HSbooster delved into the potential of #standardisation to amplify the impact of EU-funded #naturebasedsolutions projects. Our collaboration spans across six Task Forces (Nature-based Solutions TFs), which are pivotal in elevating knowledge and practices across more than 70 interconnected projects. 🎯 1. Ensuring Consistency and Excellence: Adopting standardised measures ensures that initiatives, from rejuvenating urban green spaces to restoring coastal habitats, adhere to high-quality standards essential for sustainable success. ✔ 2. Preventing Greenwashing: It is crucial to distinguish genuine environmental efforts from mere superficial claims. Standards provide a framework that helps validate the authenticity of eco-friendly projects, enhancing their credibility and garnering legitimate support. 🗝 3. Expanding Knowledge and Awareness: Through efforts from task forces focused on everything from data dissemination to education about nature-based solutions, we are creating vital resources such as handbooks and policy guidelines that reach beyond individual projects. 🗣 4. Boosting Cross-Sector Collaboration: Standardisation offers a common framework that facilitates collaboration across various fields and disciplines. Today’s dialogue with participants from ‘TF 1—Data & Knowledge Sharing’ and ‘TF 2—Integrated Assessment Framework’ highlighted the essential challenges and priorities in managing data and assessments to scale up the effectiveness of NbS. 📃 5. Biodiversity and plastics won't be scored, but there are additional questions for mining projects. Forestry scoring combines general forest questions with commodity-driven ones. Climate change scoring now has essential criteria for progression. Financial institutions will have private scores for forestry and water security. Forgive me Karl Burkart,...I'm still confused by biodiversity credits. Is it like "adopting a rhino" - as per the longstanding WWF fundraising approach? In the credit case are you effectively adopting a patch of woodland or wetland? Is there a legal difference between a donation and buying a credit? As a credit buyer, can I trace my financial contribution to a specific area (I don't think adopting a rhino is linked to a specific animal)? PS. In the latest from Where #Nature Meets #Climate, we dive into #policy considerations for how to expand private sector investment into Natural Climate Solutions #NCS in the #USA. Here are the top five challenges and potential approaches to address those challenges that I see today: 🔴 Science Based Targets initiative doesn’t allow/incentivize corporates to source carbon credits outside of their value chain (most of the beyond value chain mitigation opportunities are nature-based) to meet their climate commitments. ✅ Work with SBTi to include beyond value chain mitigation within their main corporate net-zero certification framework for residual emissions that are not possible to abate today. 🔴 SBTi’s definition of value chain and how the value chain boundaries are defined is too constrictive. ✅ Encourage SBTi (and existing and forthcoming compliance mechanisms) to expand their definition of the value chain to include all areas adjacent to a plot that impact the productivity of that plot. This is particularly important as the focus expands beyond natural climate solutions to nature-based solutions looking at forests contribution not only to climate mitigation, but other ecosystem provisioning services and biodiversity. 🔴 In certain compliance mechanisms, natural climate solutions are expressly included in the legislation/directive but in others it is more opaque as to whether NCS will be permitted.   ✅ Engage with state and federal agencies and legislators to ensure that any existing and future climate policy clearly allows and incentivizes the use of Natural Climate Solutions to achieve near-term climate mitigation (such as CA AB 1305) 🔴 The critique that natural climate solutions do not have sufficient durability to be used as an offset for emissions, compensation for residual emissions or contribution for carbon drawdown.   ✅ Encourage SBTi and regulatory disclosure reporting mechanisms to transition from a static to a dynamic accounting system tracking all historical emissions and credits purchased to offset/compensate for historical emissions. I've written about this previously - https://lnkd.in/eFTZhAnF 🔴 In the US, there is not currently any regulation requiring corporates to engage in reducing their impact on nature or take positive action. But progress is being made in voluntary space with the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD) and Science-based Targets for Nature (SBTN). ✅ Support both voluntary, and ideally regulatory policy, that requires corporates to have net positive impact on nature, such as the Net-positive Biodiversity Gain law recently passed in the UK, would result in new revenue streams for nature-based carbon projects and increase the financial viability of ecosystem conservation and restoration projects write large. 🔗 to full article: https://lnkd.in/ed6aWRKY

The third working group of the IPCC focused on mitigation and climate change. There's a rapidly closing window to cut emissions in order to keep within 1.5C. First, as of time of issuing report, 80% of the carbon budget for 1.5 had already been used. Only 20% remained. Also, peaking of emissions needed to happen between 2020-2025. That's yet to happen. It is of course better to remain below 1.5 than overshoot and come back later. These are some of the insights from the report, the rest of which I summarized below.
