Keeping up with the state of web technology is one of the biggest challenges for us developers today. We invent new tools; we define new best practices, everything’s new, always... And we do all that for good user experience! We do all that to build the best possible web – it’s all about our users. But is it, really? Or do developers like to play with technology secretly loving the new and shiny? Or do we only pretend that it’s about users, and behind closed doors, it’s developer experience that matters to us? Did we lose direction? Is it time for a critical look at the state of the web and the role JavaScript plays in it?

Building Responsive Websites and Apps with Drupal

This document discusses building responsive websites and apps with Drupal. It begins by explaining what responsive design is and how it allows websites to adapt to different screen sizes through CSS media queries and flexible grids. It advocates using a mobile-first approach where the mobile version is the baseline and enhanced for larger screens. Key aspects covered include responsive images, the Modernizr module, feature detection libraries, and front-end performance optimization.

The document discusses responsive web design and some of the challenges it faces. It recommends adopting a mobile first approach where the mobile styles are defined first before desktop styles, allowing for a progressive enhancement. It also emphasizes the importance of performance and ensuring responsive designs are not just focused on layout but also on optimizing for speed. Key techniques discussed include building mobile first, reordering media queries, keeping basic styles outside queries, and scoping images within media queries to avoid unnecessary downloads.

This document discusses using ethnographic techniques to understand user needs and behaviors in libraries, archives, and museums. It outlines 7 key ethnographic techniques including observation, interviews, cognitive mapping, and cultural probes. The goal is to gather insights that can be used to design small changes that improve the user experience. Examples are given of changes institutions have made based on ethnographic research, such as adjusting opening hours, adding signage and charging stations. The document encourages organizations to try these methods by starting with a specific space or user group and making changes quickly based on findings.

This document discusses best practices for UX deliverables. It emphasizes adapting deliverables to the intended audience, whether that be clients, teams, or developers. Different approaches are needed depending on whether development is handled internally or outsourced. The document also stresses that deliverables should add value to the project by effectively communicating insights, rather than just making pretty documents. Quotes from UX professionals provide examples of what various stakeholders find important in good UX deliverables.

Deliverables should have a clear narrative and tell a story. Creating visually engaging deliverables that keep the audience's attention is important, especially when presenting to clients who may not have a background in UX. The document also stresses that UX is about collaboration between different roles and that effective deliverables facilitate common understanding between teams.

1) Advances in artificial intelligence and automation will significantly impact jobs and the nature of work in the coming decades. Many existing jobs will be replaced by machines and new types of jobs will emerge. 2) To prepare for these changes, there will need to be a major focus on education and developing skills like creativity, critical thinking, and empathy that are uniquely human. 3) Rather than fighting technological progress, society will need to adapt and find new ways for humans and machines to collaborate, with people focusing on work only machines cannot do.

This document discusses recovery methods for high performance sports. It covers fundamental concepts of recovery including overtraining and examining overtraining symptoms. It evaluates different recovery methods like sleep, nutrition, compression, massage, and cold water therapy. The research showed no significant physiological benefits from compression, massage or cold water individually. It emphasizes collecting meaningful data and providing athletes autonomy in their recovery routines. The key takeaways are following biologically dictated periodization, perception is an athlete's reality, giving autonomy when possible, and gathering useful performance metrics.

This document summarizes survey results from LinkedIn on emerging technologies such as wearables, virtual reality, self-driving cars, and artificial intelligence. Some key findings include: 35% of respondents use wearables daily, with use increasing with age and job level up to a point; 24% would purchase a self-driving car when available, decreasing sharply with age; 16% intend to purchase a VR headset in the next 12 months, highest among those aged 25-34; and 32% are concerned about the rise of artificial intelligence, decreasing with age. Those concerned about AI are more open to self-driving cars and VR headsets but no more likely to use wearables.

Digital assessment can transform the learning process and increase engagement if implemented properly. While technology has evolved significantly since 2000, assessment practices have not changed much. The overuse of technology for content delivery instead of focusing on the learning process has resulted in workload issues for teachers and disengagement among students. However, digitizing the assessment process can improve efficiency and functionality similar to other areas. A trial at one school saw digitized assessments requiring far less time but providing more feedback interactions and an increase in independent learning and math skills relating to real life situations. With only basic device, WiFi and internet requirements, any school can trial digital assessment by enlisting one teacher.

Mantras of startups: "fail fast", "move fast and break things", "keep shipping" - these are all great slogans, but unknown to many - these are really all about learning. It's about getting things in front of your customers early, and often. Watching - and learning. Finding what ideas were not quite as brilliant as you once thought - and finding this out as fast and cheap as possible. How are modern product teams making this happen? Where does User Experience and customer research fit in this model? Taking from Agile, Lean, and User Centered Design - this talk will go over the build-measure-learn process, and how you can start to shape your organization to move fast, without leaving your customers behind. Dude, where is my Customer?

This document discusses the importance of customer development and learning in creating successful products and startups. It emphasizes that startups should not follow the traditional "build it and they will come" model, but instead should invent a parallel process of customer discovery to learn about customers' needs and problems. Quotes from Steve Blank and Ash Maurya promote iterating products quickly based on customer feedback in a "build-measure-learn" loop, rather than developing a detailed plan before launching. The document argues this approach leads to better outcomes than having a single "Plan A" by finding a product/market fit before running out of resources.

How to Act Like an Agency within a Company: UX for the Enterprise

Your typical medium sized international enterprise will typically outsource to smaller agencies that specialize in Internet marketing, design, and development. By bringing that type of talent in-house, an enterprise can communicate their marketing strategies and messages with greater speed to market and more collective creative control. While the initial capital investment may be greater than simply outsourcing, the long-term benefit of having immediate and direct contact with an in-house team will lead to a greater understanding of company culture and values reflected within the framework of your digital properties.

“You – everyone in fact – have all it takes to be a
brilliant designer, creator, or author. All that’s holding
you back is the lizard. It’s that little voice in the back of
your head, the “but” or the “what if” that speaks up at
the crucial moment and defeats the joy and insight you
brought to the project in the first place. It’s the lizard
that ruins your career, stunts your projects, and hinders
your organization.”
