A fun look at how to extend WordPress with class and consistency. Challenges plug-in and theme authors to apply a new, rigorous philosophy to their work: what would core do?

A design talk geared towards designers who are new to the world of web design. I’ll cover items such as: how web design is unique from other kinds of design (such as print), how to leverage research and analytics to create data informed designs, steps to become a proficient web designer and how to choose and work with developers. If there are folks in the room using Illustrator or PSD, I'll show you how to set up Illustrator files for web design and prep files for a developer.

WAI-ARIA provides semantics and accessibility information to web pages and applications developed with technologies like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. It defines roles, states, and properties that can be applied to elements to define their purpose and relationships. This allows assistive technologies like screen readers to better understand the structure, functionality and relationships within complex JavaScript-driven applications and dynamic content.

As a software consultant, I get to see a lot of interesting code. In this particular instance a client was in the process of transforming their web application to a rich, interactive interface with the help of another company. The project kicked off using Backbone and things were great. Until they were not great. Pages starting getting more and more involved and blame started being thrown at the technology choice. A move to Ember.js ensued and the app was rewritten. But architecturally bad decisions don't hide long, and soon the rewrite was preforming even worse. That's when I stepped in, with the help of another consultant, to solve the performance issues once and for all. Our solution used Backbone.js and it was fast. This is that journey.
