A Quiet Place: Day One Reviews

A Quiet Place: Day One, Nyong’o agrees to her own stigmatization -- a perpetual victim archetype in another shabby enterprise.

There isn’t wall-to-wall violence. There’s wall-to-wall expectations of it, and that’s even more chilling.

In the film’s sci-fi world, noise is death and quiet is life. Could there be a better metaphor for the dynamics of our digital age?

Despite Lupita Nyong'o's magnificent performance, this installment ends up lacking the tension of its two unsettling predecessors. [Full Review in Spanish]

Not as "quiet' as the previous versions, this has a little more dialogue and enormously nuanced performances from Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn

A blown-to-bits bus sequence, with shadows of ashen-faced 9/11 footage, kicks off her Odyssean quest not to get off the island, but instead to have one last slice of pizza ... This quiet determination ... lends the film a beautiful melancholy.

Centring the film on a woman, specifically a Black woman’s experiences and her journey, elevates A Quiet Place: Day One from the merely imitative or reductive into something more, something arguably better.

This prequel is an assured work, one that brings the action and scares while at the same time treading fertile new thematic ground. It’s invigorating to see a franchise film be this concerned about being a great movie first and brand extension second.

"Watching the death angels infest New York City architecture like a nest of creepy-crawly spiders is perfect. What’s the point of long leggy monsters if they don’t have buildings, crazy skylines and subway tunnels to crawl all over?!"

...a watchable yet somewhat disappointing endeavor that ultimately fares best in its promising, engaging opening half hour...

A surprisingly human story about a pair of isolated individuals who just so happen to find themselves in A Quiet Place film. Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn are fantastic and the film does right by its feline co-star (the true third lead of the film!)

A Quiet Place: Day One may not bring anything new to the genre or to its own cinematic universe when it comes to expand its borders, but it sure delivers top notch Human Drama as Nyong'o's performance elevates it all.

Though... Day One is equipped with a few plot defects, Michael Sarnoski’s sci-fi horror film more than makes up for it with intense action scenes, deeply moving performances, and a poignant message that emphasizes the significance of human connection.

Like the piano music, the film reminds us that even in the darkest and most desolate moments, art remains a beacon of hope. [Full review in Spanish]

Besides delving into the human condition and how disposable we are, A Quiet Place: Day One does not forget that it is a horror film, and while it falters a little on that end, it never falls. [Full review in Spanish]

While “Day One” follows a somewhat similar blueprint as its predecessors, the human element really has an impact. Nyong’o is the essential piece, adding a very different dynamic to the horror movie protagonist.

Michael Sarnoski has perfected the trick of turning genre film into poetic cinema.

A Quiet Place: Day One” presented the opportunity to answer questions the first two movies didn’t exactly need to but it didn't. Maybe the filmmakers needed to give us a reason to watch “A Quiet Place Part III,” which seems likely the next step.

Nyong’o has already proven with “Us” that she is a beyond compelling silent star. “A Quiet Place: Day One” is worth a trip to the box office for.

... Fine, professional, but definitively not a transcendent entry into mainstream Hollywood. [Full review in Spanish]
