Michael McClellan

Environmental Support Division Director

Michael F. McClellan is director of the Environmental Support Division (ESD) of Michigan's Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). The ESD is responsible for proactive outreach and support to transparently connect the public to the agency's work.

The division hosts live events such as public hearings and meetings, coordinates webinars, produces videos, and develops publications in multiple languages and on diverse platforms as necessary. The ESD ensures that public meetings and public hearings are professionally conducted and archived for public access. The division also operates the Environmental Assistance Center, Pollution Emergency Alerting System (PEAS) hotline, coordinates emergency response efforts, oversees the department's facilities, and provides education and training opportunities.

Michael has 28 years of experience with the department, encompassing a broad range of environmental programs. Before assuming his current role in 2018, he recently served in the executive office and has been chief of field operations section east for the Remediation and Redevelopment Division. He also served as a district coordinator, facilitating collaboration and communications across divisions with the then-Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's executive office and elected officials.

In addition to his technical background, Michael has strong interpersonal skills and an inclusive and collaborative leadership style. He is a lifelong learner with a passion for leadership and facilitating appreciative, positive team dynamics.

Michael has a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University and is a graduate of the university's Great Lakes Leadership Academy. He and his wife live in East Lansing and have four adult children.
