As we enter a new fiscal year, please help us thank our outgoing Management Committee members. These rockstar human beings have dedicated their time and expertise the past 2+ years advancing ULI's mission in South Carolina, growing the ULI South Carolina District Council, and fostering collaboration and the sharing of best practices in our markets. We are happy to say that all of these members will be staying involved either as members of the Governance Committee or Regional Executive Committees. And, please join us in welcoming these new FY25-26 leaders. Although "new" to these roles, these members are certainly not new to ULI, having been involved and leading in their respective markets around the state for several years. We are fortunate to have their leadership and look forward to continuing to work with them in their new roles.

This week ULI South Carolina Upstate’s Project Spotlight took us on a walking tour of Hartness. More than a mere development by Hartness Development, Inc.,it is a thoughtfully designed master-planned community that seamlessly blends residential, commercial, and recreational spaces, including Hotel Hartness. Residents and visitors alike enjoy beautifully landscaped parks, serene lakes, and walking trails. These green areas, inspired by nature, feature community gardens, pocket parks, and outdoor gathering spots—encouraging social interaction, relaxation, and appreciation for the natural environment. Sustainability is at the heart of Hartness, from energy-efficient design to native plant landscaping. It’s quite tranquil and ideal for healthy living. And to top it off, we enjoyed a delightful happy hour on the lovely patios of Hotel Hartness. Cheers! Thank you to the Hartness team , especially Sean Hartness, Jim Burns. And Marsh Bell Construction and Hotel Hartness for sponsoring our social time! And thank you Hartness for sharing your land with the community for events like the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by TD SYNNEX # 30th Anniversary Celebration being held this weekend.

Thanks for all who joined us at our ULI South Carolina State of the Upstate featuring the City of Clemson and Clemson University. A panel of city and university officials shared ongoing and upcoming projects around the campus and city, the challenges of rapid growth and rising costs of accommodating the infrastructure to support the growth, which is not just students, but retirees choosing to live in Clemson. How does the city best utilize available land and development and constraints involved? Strategic planning and collaboration between these entities will guide what's next. A plus-Clemson has expanded to more graduate level programs leading to new construction on campus and a stronger research presence across the state. A new Veterinary College, Advanced Materials Innovation Complex, Forestry & Environmental Conservation, Alumni and Visitor Center and a list of renovations and relocations that will drive innovation and enhance the workforce in the state and beyond. Thank you, Clemson mayor Robert Halfacre, Andy Blondeau, Clemson City Manager, Nathan Woods, Clemson Director of Planning and Development, and Clemson University's Peter Knudsen, AICP, GGP, Director of Planning and Design and Laura H. Stoner, VP of Real Estate and Operations. And our moderator, Chip Buchanan, PE!!! Thank you to our sponsors DP3 Architects and SeamonWhiteside for hosting us at The Inn at Patrick Square.

According to the Center for American Women and Politics, approximately 30% of Municipal Officeholders in South Carolina are women. It's safe to say that women are underrepresented in city management and have distinct experiences compared to their male colleagues. Last night, the Coastal Women’s Leadership Initiative was treated to a conversation with 4 exceptional women leaders working to create thriving communities throughout our region and the state. A big thanks to Kendra Stewart, Christie Rainwater, Rebecca Vance, AICP, ICMA-CM and Natalie Zeigler ICMA-CM for sharing their professional and personal experiences, along with words of wisdom, with the group. They also shared some exciting initiatives focused on community amenities and affordable housing happening in Goose Creek, Hanahan and Ridgeville. As always, thanks to our Presenting Sponsor, McMillan PLLC and our host CBI We hope to see you at our next Coastal Women's Leadership Initiative Event in Charleston on July 30. More details coming soon!
