After an intensive participation and co-creation process the first draft of our public space and mobility concept "Altstadt für alle" (Old Town for Everyone) has just been published and presented to the public. The concept includes a number of recommendations and actions for making an “Old Town for Everyone“: • Introducing an updated parking strategy and circulation plan for all modes of transport • Improving walking and cycling conditions • Enhancing public transit, including a new micro bus and rickshaws • Improving conditions for logistics • Introducing 20 and 30 km/h zones • Enhancing green spaces and increasing the number of street trees • Creating more recreational areas • Implementing safe and fun school streets and more... Even though we have done our best to find the right balance between all modes of transport, it is in the nature of these projects that not everybody is amazed by the plan; for some the plans are too radical, for others not radical enough. We will therefore continue to work through to October, incorporating the positive and negative feedback and detail the concept further! Last year, Gehl and KONTEXTPLAN AG were invited to take part in a collaborative competition for the future of Biel/Bienne train station in Switzerland. Our approach? “How do we better connect the city center with the train station and the lake? Why not build a canal from the Bielersee to the station, promoting ‘Sail & Ride’?What about an integrated bike parking facility offering shortcuts and cycling-through shopping at the station? Why don’t we bring the thousands of daily bus passengers even closer to the platforms and create an attractive meeting place in front of the station?” — Andreas Roehl All these conceptual ideas were part of our design process and helped shape our vision for the station. We are thrilled to announce the launch of Realdania’s latest initiative and open call for communities and associations to apply for one of 150 new communal spaces in Denmark. 🎉 Since summer 2023, Gehl has had the pleasure of collaborating with Realdania to facilitate the competition, engaging six architecture and design studios to ideate and finalize the designs for a series of small communal houses and open pavilions. “We hope these pavilions will provide the spaces communities need to meet and host activities and events that foster a greater sense of belonging and identity.” — Astrid Marie Astrupgaard We believe that infrastructures like these are crucial in supporting local communities.
