#WeekendMusing We are constantly testing our assumptions and finding out how IP actually works on the ground in most challenging environs for fledgling enterprises in developing and least developed countries. What we found is that resources which can be devoted to generate and protect IP are extremely limited. Tough market conditions and a myriad of business problems almost always also require the entrepreneur’s attention, so much so that the IP agenda and concerns are left in the back burner. However, there are those who have braved through the business challenges for some time and have started to invest on innovation and IP. They want to make the leap of faith to create a differentiating brand, register trademarks across jurisdictions, search for new technologies, purchase modern machines and modify their processes to innovate their product offerings. For both groups of stakeholders, we feel the need to reach out and have an honest conversation on what needs to be done, what should be prioritized and how to manage resources realistically to achieve what is most/more important. We know IP is not a panacea or magic pill, and there are trade-offs and nuances in using the IP system, like everything else in life. For this reason, engaging directly with the industry players up close and talking to the potential users, help make IP truly work for everyone everywhere - one group at a time. No wonder it is becoming a huge part of our work in the region - communicating with stakeholders. We do it online, offline and in person by visiting businesses. Our approach is to communicate with the target audience along with our counterparts - the national IP office (sometime also with other related agencies) and more importantly, with industry and business experts (thanks to our international partners, #ITC, #UNCTAD, #ICC, etc.) and IP professionals, so the conversation is more comprehensive, multi-disciplinary, 360 degrees - and hopefully not in a lopsided manner.
