Advocating for Growth of the U.S. Biochar Industry

About us

The U.S. Biochar Coalition industry trade association unifies the voice of biochar, agriculture, forestry, climate tech, and carbon removal industry stakeholders in advocacy for and development of market, policy, and economic conditions to catalyze biochar industry growth. Our Mission - Advocate for legislative, policy, & regulatory action to build & open markets for the production & use of biochar in the U.S. - Raise federal policy, legislative & regulatory awareness of the benefits of biochar systems & products to break down barriers to growth - Deconstruct silos between the biochar business community & end use market sectors to cross pollinate opportunities for growth - Unite industry leaders, create opportunities for collaboration, build a platform for action Biochar is the solid material obtained from the thermochemical conversion of biomass in an oxygen-limited environment. In addition to biochar’s many agronomic, environmental, electrochemical, and structural benefits, it is a carbon dioxide removal (“CDR”) taskmaster. 1 ton of high temperature biochar placed into a durable sequestration permanently removes 3 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, fixing the CO2 stored in biomass & taking it out of the carbon cycle for millennia. When applied to soils for regenerative agriculture, soil health, landscape restoration, & biodiversity preservation, biochar amplifies its CDR impact by activating and strengthening natural CDR systems. Biochar has immense potential to stimulate innovation & growth of the bioeconomy by reducing the carbon intensity & enhancing the performance of hard to abate products: construction materials, cement, plastics, and more. There is no more powerful climate solution available to us. It is time that all key stakeholders and decision makers in the climate change, agriculture, biodiversity, finance, adaptation, & resiliency ecosystems recognize the value of biochar & step up to rapidly deploy it. We have no time to lose.

🔥 🇩🇰 Breaking: Denmark introduces €100/t CO2 tax in agriculture AND invests €1.35b into biochar carbon removal 🇩🇰 🔥 😮 Huge news coming out of Denmark today: in a world-first, Denmark just passed a law that will impose a carbon tax on all its livestock emissions. In a smart move, Denmark simultaneously uses the proceeds to create the Green Area Fund to support farmers/industry with the transition. The details: ➡ Agriculture accounts for more than half of Denmark’s land use and around a third of the country’s carbon emissions.  ➡ The law will lead to CO2 reductions of 1.8Mt by 2030, with a potential of 2.6Mt ➡ It introduces a tax on livestock emissions of €40 (350 DKK) until 2030, going up to €100 (750 DKK) in 2035 ➡ It creates the Green Area Fund worth €5.35b (40b DKK) ➡ It sets aside €1.35b (10b DKK) specifically for biochar carbon removal (#BCR). I am told that the government is planning to subsidise BCR to the tune of up to €300/t. 🚜 This is nothing short of incredible. In an environment where farmers are protesting against climate action across Europe, Denmark has managed to get backing from key industry and environmental groups to pull this off. 🎯 It also represents - by far - the largest support for BCR I am aware of, likely turning Denmark into the epicenter of BCR globally. 💶 This news comes just a month after Denmark announced the award of $166m for 1.1Mt of CCS as part of its $370m BioCCS fund - see comments for background. 👏 Congrats to everyone involved, particularly Pyrolyse Danmark. And thank you Morten Heick for your tireless efforts. 🔗 See full press release from the Danish government here: https://lnkd.in/dW6xDry8 😍 What a great day for carbon dioxide removal and the climate! #carbonremoval #climatepolicy #netzero

🇪🇺🪨 The future of biochar carbon removal (#BCR) in Europe 🪨🇪🇺 Today, the European Commission held a long-awaited workshop focused fully on BCR and its role within the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (#CRCF) and broader EU climate policy. 👀 Why BCR? According to CDR.fyi it accounted for 81% of total durable CDR sales and 91% of all deliveries in Q1 2024 (93% in all of 2023, and 87% in 2022). The recent State of CDR further reported deliveries of 790,000t of BCR in 2023. BCR is the most readily available, durable CDR method available to us today. The workshop built on the excellent BCR Technical Scoping Paper prepared by Chris Malins and the team Cerulogy. It was an insightful and well-attended session. Here are my key takeaways: 📜 CRCF: BCR now sits squarely in the permanent removals category. Discussions from the early days on inclusion in carbon farming have finally been put to rest. 🔒 Permanence: speakers Hamed Sanei and Cecilia Sundberg were in agreement that IPCC’s decay function for biochar is simply outdated and a future methodology needs to reflect current scientific evidence around the high permanence of (intertinite) biochar, likely with a combination of H/C ratio and reflectance rate testing. 💡 Standards: BCR already has five standards to ensure production and use lead to genuine, sustainable carbon removal. As Carbonfuture’s Anna J. LEHNER stressed: the focus needs to shift to harmonisation and embedding these into a robust, scaleable monitoring, reporting, and verification (#MRV) system. ➕ Additionality: Amalie Tokkesdal from the Danish Government highlighted that their assessment shows 100% of BCR in Denmark will be additional. Carbon finance is simply the only way to scale BCR to climate-relevant scale 🔥 Overall, the momentum behind BCR is tangible, both at the global level and now increasingly within EU CDR policy discussions. And rightly so! If anything, I would argue BCR deserves a much larger role than it currently has. I am glad to see so much interest and work going into this highly-scaleable, durable CDR method. 📅 So where do we go from here? Chris and his team will now take all the input from the workshop and develop a strawman paper for the next Expert Group meeting this October, to then develop a draft methodology by April 2025, all on track to have BCR CRCF units ready to go in 2026. 👏 Huge shout-out to the tireless work on the CRCF by the team at DG Clima around Christian Holzleitner, Fabien Ramos, and Andrea Klaric. ⁉️ Whether you attended or not: what is your take on the future of BCR in Europe? Does the above resonate? What did you take away from the session? #carbonremoval #carbonmarkets #netzero

🔥 The 2024 State of CDR Report is out! 🔥 ❓ Are we actually on track to scale carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) to the levels we need? And how much exactly do we really need? 💡 The State of CDR Report (#SoCDR), now in its second edition, is your one-stop shop to answer these and many other questions. It brings together the brightest minds in CDR to compile an impressive 200 page report covering everything from policy, to R&D, to the market, and much more. Here are some highlights I took away from reading it: 🎯 Targets: we will need between 3.8 Gt in 2050 (very unlikely) to 9.8Gt of CDR per year by 2050. The amount of CDR proposed by governments around the world falls way short of what is required to meet the Paris temperature goal – the so-called #CDRgap. 📊 Amounts: today, we remove over 2 Gt/year already. However, novel CDR accounts for only around 0.0013 Gt of this leading with biochar carbon removal (#BCR) at 0.79 Mt, #BECCS at 0.51 Mt, #DACCS at 0.004 Mt, and enhanced weathering (#EW) at approximately 0.03 MtCO2. 📈 Models: almost all 630 IPCC models include conventional CDR (620), most include BECCS (601), some DACCS (217), but almost none EW (15) or BCR (1). Shocking to me how low these last two numbers are given the potential of non-CCS CDR methods. 💱 Voluntary carbon market (#VCM): credits issued for conventional CDR fell in 2023 from 20.4 million to 13.3 million, while purchases of future novel CDR credits grew from 600,000 to 4.6 million. The VCM accounts for only 2% of total carbon trade, with compliance markets (emissions trading schemes) covering the other 98%. 💵 Price: on average, credits from conventional CDR methods (which ranged from $12 to $16 in 2023) cost three times more than credits generated from emission reduction or avoidance projects. The average weighted price for novel CDR credits (which ranged from $111 to $1,608 in 2023) exceeds the price for credits from emission reduction or avoidance projects by a factor of 100. 😍 Finally, I was glad to see a whole chapter dedicated to monitoring, reporting, and verification (#MRV). The report rightly points to the central role MRV will play in scaling CDR to climate relevance, as well as the huge complexity we currently see in the market. This is the raison d’etre of Carbonfuture, and we look forward to helping solve this challenge. 🔗 I highly recommend reading the full report - download it here: https://lnkd.in/dUb2KSrk 👏 Shout-out to the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford as well as the lead authors for their outstanding work: Steve Smith, Oliver Geden, Matthew GIDDEN, William F. 🇺🇲 🔥 Breaking: DoE Announcement - CDR Public Procurement takes a big leap forward 🔥 🇺🇲 🏅 The good news keep rolling in from the U.S. today! The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management just announced the Phase 1 winners of its $35m pioneering public procurement of carbon dioxide removal (#CDR).   💰 This first phase gives out $1.2 million through $50k grants to propel innovations in #CDR across four sectors: direct air capture (#DAC), biomass carbon removal and storage (#BiCRS), enhanced carbon mineralization, and carbon sinks. 👏 As we celebrate the 24 winners, it’s time to gear up for Phase II! Congrats to all of you, including Lithos Carbon, Climate Robotics, Eion, Graphyte , Charm Industrial, CarbonCapture Inc., Mati Carbon, Climeworks, Ebb Carbon, Heirloom, Carbon Lockdown , and Vaulted Deep. Phase 2️⃣ Compete for an additional substantial $3.75 million now on the table, with ten grants of $375k each for technologies towards commercial viability and with negotiations of delivery contracts with DOE. Phase 3️⃣ will award ten $3 million grants with an objective of at least 3,000 net tonnes CO2 removed over of 36 months. 💰 A reminder of the importance of public procurement to scale CDR: it represents about 13% of GDP in OECD countries. 🙌 Earlier today, key officials including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, outlined guidelines aimed at directing private capital towards robust decarbonization efforts through responsible participation in Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCM) - see comment section. 🌎 This dual approach—advancing public procurement alongside enhancing private market participation—highlights a comprehensive strategy to scale the CDR industry and develop a diversified technology portfolio that is crucial for our sustainable future. 💪 It’s amazing to see the momentum building in the U.S. Yes, the amounts are still small. But what counts here is not the money but the learning: other governments will be able to piggyback off the all the experiences we are gathering. 👏 Shout out to the team at the DoE leading these efforts: Noah Deich, Slade Sinak, Rory Jacobson and many others. 🔗 See here for the official press release: https://lnkd.in/duHxDya8 ⁉ What do you think? What is your take on today’s announcements? #publicprocurement #carbonremovals #carbonmarkets
