Juneteenth is a great time to shout out Black-owned businesses in the United States for continuing to push through despite a decades-long history of laws and discriminatory practices barring them from success. But we still have a long way to go. In 2023, years after researchers from Brigham Young University, Utah State University, and Rutgers University uncovered discriminatory lending practices, they revealed that not much has changed, as "banks still offer Black customers inferior loan products and service, even when those Black customers have objectively stronger financial profiles and FICO scores than White customers," according to BYU. As unfair practices persist, 96% of Black-owned businesses are sole proprietorships, which is disproportionately high, according to the Brookings Institution, which says: "These disparities reflect the systemic barriers Black business owners face in becoming employers due to unequal access to capital, networks, and government contracts." #juneteenth #juneteenth2024 #blackownedbusiness #supportblackbusiness #supportsmallbusiness
