Juneteenth is a great time to shout out Black-owned businesses in the United States for continuing to push through despite a decades-long history of laws and discriminatory practices barring them from success. But we still have a long way to go. In 2023, years after researchers from Brigham Young University, Utah State University, and Rutgers University uncovered discriminatory lending practices, they revealed that not much has changed, as "banks still offer Black customers inferior loan products and service, even when those Black customers have objectively stronger financial profiles and FICO scores than White customers," according to BYU. As unfair practices persist, 96% of Black-owned businesses are sole proprietorships, which is disproportionately high, according to the Brookings Institution, which says: "These disparities reflect the systemic barriers Black business owners face in becoming employers due to unequal access to capital, networks, and government contracts." #juneteenth #juneteenth2024 #blackownedbusiness #supportblackbusiness #supportsmallbusiness

On my book #BlackFinancialCulture: 2 out of 10 The "Black" in the title of my book has three meanings: 1.) In "Black Financial Culture, ""Black" represents a desired financial state. It aligns the identity of the Black community with being financially and emotionally solvent, whereas "in the black" traditionally means having positive earnings and no debt. It sets the stage for a deeper exploration of strategies and practices that foster financial stability and growth among individuals and families. 2.) In "Black Financial Culture," the metaphorical use of the term "Black" as absorbing light to create warmth and comfort serves as a foundational concept to inspire and motivate. It suggests that embracing one's identity and experiences can transform challenges into a nurturing force, fostering a supportive environment for financial growth. This line encourages readers to approach their financial journey with grace and self-compassion, recognizing the unique struggles and strengths within the Black community. It underlines the book's theme of using personal and collective histories as a source of empowerment, not just in finances but all aspects of life. 3.) In "Black Financial Culture," the term "Black" symbolizes the rich narratives derived from Black culture, which serve as a fertile backdrop for various transformative themes. This approach underscores the importance of incorporating cultural heritage into financial education, enabling healing from historical and personal trauma, and embracing the power of forgiveness. By doing so, the book fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of sustainable wealth creation within the Black community. It highlights how embracing and learning from these narratives can empower individuals to be refined and not defined by life's circumstances. 🚨Despite the significant contributions of Black-owned businesses to the U.S. economy, there are still substantial barriers that Black entrepreneurs face when it comes to accessing capital, resources, and support. ▶️One of the most striking statistics is that only 1 in 20 Black Americans hold business equity compared to their white counterparts, which means that Black entrepreneurs are less likely to have the resources and financial stability they need to start and grow their businesses. . . #nhe3 #nhe3connector #blackhistorymonth #blackbusinesses #blackownedbusinesses #blackbusinessesmatter #blackbusinessmatters #finanicalliteracy

Financial Therapist + Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC®️)| Award Winning Thought Leader On Financial Trauma | Forbes Contributor | Speaker
I wrote an article for Forbes about this earlier this year (attached) and it’s something I’ve been thinking about ever since. With information around the wealth and wage gap making its rounds in the realm of diversity and inclusion work, there isn’t often a solution offered to help those navigating this new space of financial security or upward mobility beyond a pat on the back about how well they were able to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. With the turn of the year I’m going to spend more time using my financial counseling and financial therapy skills to support the first generation high income Black professional who may not be ready to see a CFP but need some support. I wonder, can you relate to this experience? How do you personally establish boundaries in balancing your financial health and values aligned to supporting your family and community? #diversityandinclusion #financialcounseling #financialtherapy

Do You Feel You Relate More To Poor People? Reflecting on the me who once navigated a world without understanding credit, budgeting, or the nuances of financial choices. It's a version of me I talk about often – a reminder of how mindset shifts and financial education can redefine our paths. Fast forward to advising millionaires and "mass affluent" clients, effortlessly guiding them through credit cards, investments, and financial choices. It wasn't just a job; it was an experience that shaped me. Yet, it brought a shift. I found myself adapting to their attitudes, feeling a disconnect with those who hadn't walked in similar financial circles. It felt like I existed in a limbo, bridging two worlds. I relate to the frugality and vigilance around money from my childhood, but more so to the 'me's' that slip through the cracks: The burdened with always having answers. The expected lenders and financial rescuers. Those who know how to manage money but grapple with growing or planning for the long term. I've come to understand my superpower – relating not just to the experiences of the financially challenged but to those in-between If this sounds like you, I'd love to talk! I'm committed to using my financial counseling and financial therapy skills to support the first generation high income Black professional. Send me a DM and let's connect. #financialcounseling #financialplanning #moneymindset

Money provokes a myriad of emotions and thoughts. And you know us at The Lighthouse and Black Girl Times, that means, we want to talk about it. We’ve chosen April to explore the relationship between Black folks and their finances. It's important to acknowledge the complexities. Whether you’re a coupon connoisseur, a budgeting guru, a frugallista or a free-spirited spender, our financial habits are intertwined with our experiences, aspirations, and cultural influences. As we embark on our editorial exploration for the month, we expect to do so with nuance and empathy, recognizing there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to financial freedom. Each of us brings our own set of experiences, values, and aspirations to the table, and these shape our attitudes and behaviors toward money. Art by: gkjcreates
