40+ years serving low-income and immigrant families in the DC area
About us
The Family Place has helped promote stability and well-being for low income families in Washington DC by offering education, critical resources, and social support for more than 40 years. Most of our clients are mothers with young children under the age of five. All classes and services are offered at no cost to families. The Family Place provides a welcoming, multi-cultural environment, with programs that help meet emergency needs; provide education and training; and offer access to information and other social services. We put the needs of our clients first by striving to develop programming that is both relevant and practical. Within the comforts of the Mount Pleasant row house we have owned since 1986, participants not only find access to important services, but also form mutually supportive friendships. And as we assist families in solving problems, we help them to build on their own strengths so that they can succeed independently.

Languages are communication bridges! That’s why our ESL courses for adult learners, especially immigrants, focus on practical language skills that are essential for navigating daily life in the United States, from job interviews to grocery shopping and medical appointments. We offer three levels of ESL classes from beginning through advanced adult secondary ESL. Students will gain fluency and proficiency to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Our Executive Director, Haley Wiggins, joined the "Enhancing Access for Refugees and New Americans: Next Steps Forum" by the Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE) We proudly discussed our #ESL program's impact at the "Promising Practices in Serving English Learners" panel with Genevieve Halkett from Chemeketa Community College, Britt Garton Pisto, M. Ed. from the Illinois Community College Board, and Mahalia Baldini from the Texas Workforce Commission. The panel was facilitated by Jamie Harris from World Education. We highlighted the importance of flexible schedules, childcare, and food security for supporting adult learners. Grateful for these opportunities to learn and share! 📚
