Today, Chemix welcomes Anirban D., Ph.D., as our Vice President of Quality and Industrialization! Anirban brings over 20 years of extensive experience in manufacturing, product development, quality, and supplier engineering across multiple industries, including consumer electronics, energy, and advanced materials. He has successfully managed contract manufacturers and suppliers for renowned companies like Apple and Tesla, and played a pivotal role in the supplier industrialization for Tesla’s batteries and electrodes. Anirban recently spearheaded the industrialization of one of North America's earliest LFP Gigafactory. What can AI do to help combat climate change? I discussed this topic last week on a panel at POLITICO's AI and Tech Summit in Washington DC. Fundamentally, AI systems have four main capabilities: (i) improving forecasting, (ii) designing new things, (iii) designing new processes and control algorithms, and (iv) extracting information from unstructured data. These capabilities make AI a powerful tool for battery development. Better forecasting of battery remaining useful life and state of health is critical for improving manufacturing yields and for enabling mass deployment of battery assets with long lifetimes but large up-front costs. Better material designs, from cathode and anode active materials, to electrolyte salts, solvents, and additives, to the formulations of these and dozens of other materials that comprise a full cell, are essential for making batteries more energy dense, safer, and cheaper. Better control algorithms built into battery management systems will enable faster EV charging and higher battery utilization. And extracting battery usage and performance data from raw field data will direct future product development cycles. AI is most useful for problems where (i) there is a large "design space" of possible solutions, (ii) human knowledge frameworks, e.g. fundamental science or empirical "rules of thumb", are insufficient for finding optimal solutions, and (iii) lots of high-quality data mapping possible solutions to outcome quality already exists or can be created. Not all problems satisfy these requirements; but for those which do, the opportunity for using AI to help accelerate humanity's transition to sustainable energy is enormous. I enjoyed speaking with Tim Stevens from MotorTrend Group for his article on what's next in EV batteries and how AI can speed up the development process. At the end of the day, battery development is mapping the high-dimensional input space of battery materials and designs into the high-dimensional output space of performance metrics that drive vehicle performance.
