About us

The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping project. ACLED is the highest quality and most widely used real-time data source on political violence and protest around the world. Practitioners, researchers, and governments depend on ACLED for the latest reliable information on current conflict and disorder patterns. ACLED’s aim is to capture the forms, actors, dates, and locations of political violence and protest as it occurs across states. The ACLED team conducts analysis to describe, explore, and test conflict scenarios, and makes both data and analysis open to use by the public. To read our analysis and download ACLED data, visit: www.acleddata.com. Please contact admin@acleddata.com with comments or queries regarding the ACLED dataset. • The cross-border dimensions of the ongoing conflict in #Gaza Despite its small size and a population of just two million Palestinians, Gaza has long been a global issue. The conflict's international ramifications are unique; igniting and engaging antagonisms around Israel regionally and internationally. The Gaza conflict has heightened tensions between Israel and Yemen's Houthis, Iran, Syria, and Iraq. It might have been expected to revive the declining jihadi mivement. However, the world's main reaction remains focused on the situation within Gaza, Israel's actions, and the significant impact on domestic politics in the US and many other countries traditionally supportive of Israel. Watch ACLED’s President & CEO Clionadh Raleigh as she highlights the global reverberations of the war in Gaza. Missed the webinar? Check out the full recording: https://lnkd.in/etZE7hKu

  • #Mexico’s 2024 elections were some of the most violent in recent history, with most of this violence felt at the local level. Of the 216 violent incidents where candidates or their relatives or supporters were targeted, over 80% targeted political figures running for local office, including for mayor and municipal council seats. #Veracruz state — which didn’t hold local elections in June — is a noteworthy example of how local elections can drive violence. During the last municipal elections in 2021, Veracruz was the state with the highest level of violence targeting political figures, with 57 events recorded in the six months leading up to the vote and the two weeks that followed. This time, however, ACLED records about a quarter of the 2021 figure — 17 events — in Veracruz, dropping the state to 10th in the ranking, underlining how the absence of municipal elections may correlate with reduced violence. Russian shelling, missiles, and drones killed around 30 civilians across the Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Zaporizhia regions, including a Russian missile strike on a residential building in the Dnipropetrovsk region that killed at least two civilians and injured 12 others. In parallel, Ukrainian forces targeted Russian military bases in the Zaporizhia and Donetsk regions. In Sevastopol, according to the local occupation authorities, cluster munitions from an intercepted missile killed five civilians and wounded over 150 others, including 28 children. Russian-installed staff at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant claimed Ukrainian shelling destroyed an external radiation monitoring station near Enerhodar. In collaboration with Data Cívica, Mexico Evalua, and the digital news platform Animal Político, we presented an overview of political-criminal violence and its implications for Mexico's democracy one month after the June 2024 elections. While competition between organized crime groups drives much of the political violence, at least 30% of the incidents involved riots and property destruction, suggesting that local power struggles and communal claims of irregularities during the process or rejection of the results can also trigger violence against political figures. However, political-criminal violence has not stopped after the 2 June elections. Around 19 attacks were recorded during the first two weeks of June.
