𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐚: 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭 𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐝 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧. On 26 June, amid economic turmoil and nationwide protests over fuel prices, weak currency and the cost of living, #Bolivia's President Luis Arce survived a coup attempt. The coup, led by General Juan José Zúñiga, came after Arce  had dismissed him  for opposing  former President Evo Morales’ potential 2025 candidacy. Arce denounced Zúñiga’s action and called for public mobilization “to defend democracy.” The rebellion ended quickly as newly appointed commander-in-chief José Wilson Sánchez Velázquez ordered troops to withdraw. Zúñiga, who was arrested along with 16 other people, accused Arce of orchestrating the incident to boost his popularity. More demonstrations in support of Arce took place in the aftermath of the failed coup, condemning the military action and demanding legal action against Zúñiga. 𝐈𝐬𝐫𝐚𝐞𝐥-𝐇𝐞𝐳𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟕,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝟖 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑. Israeli forces have engaged in near-daily cross-border fire with Lebanese Hezbollah along Israel’s northern border since 8 October. According to ACLED data, over 7,000 combined attacks have been recorded so far, though the intensity of fire exchanges has fluctuated. In the absence of a ceasefire in #Gaza the conflict has gradually intensified, and both sides have increasingly targeted locations deeper inside each other’s territories. The most intense phase of escalation happened from May to around mid-June: After Israel's incursion into #Rafah, Hezbollah intensified attacks with new tactics and weapons, as well as targeting cities in Israel that had not been evacuated. In June, Hezbollah also launched increasingly larger salvos of rockets that sparked extensive forest fires across northern Israel. This increased domestic pressure on the Israeli government to show a more forceful response. Islamic State Mozambique (ISM) activity has been minimal in the past two weeks in #CaboDelgado, with #ACLED recording just four political violence events. Since 2011, Nigeria’s North West region has grappled with a proliferation of armed banditry, making it the current epicenter of violence in the country. In Zamfara and Kaduna states alone there have been over 4,758 reported fatalities between 2018 and 2023. On 10 July, ACLED and the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) held a virtual launch to explore the second report in a joint series on non-state armed groups and illicit economies in #WestAfrica. The report explores the dynamics of armed banditry in North West #Nigeria, aiming to unravel their evolution, structure and the illicit economies that bandit groups engage in for financing and resourcing, as well as their interactions with local communities and other non-state armed groups. 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐲 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 - 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐦𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧. Clashes between the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) and Fano militias continued in #Amhara region in June, with 83 armed clashes recorded across nine zones. Most of these clashes occurred in West Gojam, North Shewa, and North Wello zones. Violence against civilians persisted in North Shewa, West Gojam, North Wello, Oromia Special, and Awi zones. According to the ACLED Conflict Exposure tool, since the Fano insurgency began in April 2023, over 6.1 million people in Amhara region have been exposed to conflict. 𝐀 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 - 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐨'𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. The 2024 elections in #Mexico were marred by assassinations and targeted attacks on candidates and other political figures. ACLED records over 330 incidents of violence targeting political figures during the latest electoral cycle, between the start of the federal campaign on 1 March and the voting day on 2 June. At least 95 incidents led to one or more reported deaths. On 2 July, ACLED held its first hybrid event in Spanish to discuss the main takeaways from the 2024 elections in Mexico, in collaboration with Data Cívica, Mexico Evalua and Animal Político. Sandra Pellegrini, #ACLED Latin America Regional Specialist, noted that “Mexico’s conflict landscape is fragmented due to the proliferation of non-state armed groups who engage in violence, mostly affecting civilians, leading to heightened lethality levels.” Watch Sandra Pellegrini in Mexico City discuss ACLED’s work in the country.
