Events

Each year, the Toll Public Interest Center hosts a variety of public interest and pro bono panels, symposia, retreats, and workshops that are intended to increase our students’ understanding of and excitement about service.

Public Interest Retreat 

Each fall, TPIC hosts a retreat for all public interest-minded JD and LLM students. The retreat provides students with an opportunity to get away from campus, to meet people with similar interests, and to refocus on the reasons they came to law school.

Public Interest Week

Started in 2008, Public Interest Week brings together the Law School community, as well as members of the broader local, national, and international service-minded community, for a week full of programs centered on a timely theme. Throughout the week there are both student and Law School panel discussions along with evening presentations with leading attorneys, academics, activists, and community members working to advance their causes at the highest levels.

Sparer Symposium 

Since 1984, the Edward V. Sparer Symposium has been one of the Law School’s cornerstone events. By focusing on urgent social justice issues of our time, the Sparer Symposium commemorates the life and work of the late Edward V. Sparer, Professor of Law and Social Policy. The Symposium brings together academics, practitioners, community members, activists, and organizers to provide insight into the dynamic relationship between scholarship and practice in the area of poverty law.

Alumni Impact Awards

The Law School’s approach to legal education has always been anchored in an unwavering commitment to public service. With the Alumni Impact Awards, TPIC seeks to recognize the innovation, impact, and dedication of Penn Carey Law public interest alumni who have excelled in using their law degrees to produce innovative and sustainable solutions to societal problems and who embody the tradition of public service that the Law School seeks to develop in all students.
