Question for all the more senior Data Engineers in my network What’s next? I recruit for tons of Data Engineer roles and I’ve seen the candidates I’ve worked with over the years go on to have incredible careers. But the career paths can be so varied. Some have gone on to be people managers as Head of Data Engineering. I've seen a Data Analyst go on to become a Lead Data Architect! Others have opted to become contractors and get paid massive sums. Some have moved into strategic and architectural roles. But for a lot of more junior Data Engineers, they may not know exactly what to do next. The TEKsystems: 'State of Digital Transformation, 2024' report, makes for a really, really interesting read! Some really interesting insights into how organisations are planning to invest and transform, the returns they're expecting and what they're prioritising to ensure their digital transformation efforts are set to be successfully delivered. I wanted to highlight a few areas from within the report, as many of the findings really resonated with conversations I've had with retail/consumer technology and digital leaders in recent months. The survey found that the top Digital Transformation goals are to:- - Improve Customer Experience and Engagament: 35% - Replace or upgrade legacy IT systems: 34% - Reduce operational ineffiency: 31% - Enhance employee performance/productivity: 30% - Transform existing business processes: 29% Other notable DX focusses noted were: increase innovation, bolster cybersecurity, increase speed to market of products and services, and introducing new products and services. The Top Digital Transformation Challenges were listed as:- - Complexity of current environment / siloed mindset: 32% - Gaps in technical talent: 27% - High or unforeseen costs: 26% - Cultural and capability issues: 25% - Change Management and implementation complications: 24% - Economic uncertainties: 24% - Lack of internal alignment: 22% - Alignment of DX initiatives to business strategy: 20% - Lack of Snr level support: 13% Also interesting to read was the sheer lack of confidence many organisations have in their existing teams to successfully deliver their transformational roadmaps: - 10% suggested a need to completely revise their talent base, - 33% stated that they need many new types of talent in volume, - 49% believe they require some new types of talent in a few areas, - 8% feel as though they have all the skills they need. Needless to say, the digital transformation goals of the surveyed organisations will be virtually impossible to achieve without first: - strategising around how to tackle the expected challenges - building an appropriate talent acquisition strategy and an effective, skill-relevant delivery capability. Happy Thursday guys! Today I wanted to speak about the current gap in the tech market that has been ongoing for a while. It has been a candidate driven market for the last few months, however there is still a gap in terms of the skillsets required by clients , and those that candidates possess. How do we address this? - For candidates that may have lack of experience, there should potentially be an additional requirement whereby they have an option to attend training or certification to be qualified for the role as well as long as they have a good attitude and passion for technology - Soft skills & attitude should also be considered as part of the hiring process as if we are only hiring for skills and not for character, what does that say about culture? I said yesterday that when looking to move to a senior-manager role it's less about the technical & more about the commercial Yet today I spoke to a manager who was asked during their interview for a Head of Data role To write SQL scripts during the interview Live scripting & coding exercises have always been met with mixed-reception in my experience But when looking to appoint a Head of Data Should SQL scripting be tested at interview for senior management roles? Some of the conversations I've had recently suggest a misalignment between senior managers desire to be hands on vs an organisation's perceived need for them to be hands on at interview My sense is that it comes down to the size of the data team/business unit the role will be overseeing Thoughts on this? June 2024 UK IT Salary & Contractor Rates If your company is thinking of hiring, do it now. As demand rises, so too with the rates of pay and the difficulty levels of attracting and securing the right talent. If, however, your company is slowing down - beware! If your IT staff start to feel insecure, talent competitors and recruiters will find it very easy to persuade your staff to interview elsewhere. Despite the stress and negativity that may exist, take the time to focus on reassuring your team and, where appropriate, reward their loyalty. It's a false economy to avoid salary increases for your best people. Doing so risks leave yourself vulnerable to losing key staff and the larger costs in both time and money of replacing them.
