Demand for Intermediate-level Software Developers is decreasing, resulting in salary levels on offer declining. For the time being it appears that the days of intermediate developers securing 15% - 20% pay increases when moving jobs are over.   Current advertised salaries for software developers in the UK (3 months to June 2024) are down to 2019 levels.   Is this trend mirrored elsewhere in the world? What are the causes for this?    

For Companies who have a POLICY THAT THEY ONLY PAY 15% PAY INCREASES to .Net Software Developer candidates interested in moving to their company, take a look at the salary trend data below. It should help you understand why you’re struggling to hire. The lesson here is that it’s THE MARKET THAT DETERMINES SALARY LEVELS (heavily influenced by supply vs. demand), and NOT YOUR POLICY where you believe that you can determine the market-rate. (You might also want to reflect on this data to avoid an attrition problem off the back of your current employees’ salaries).

The average salary for a back end software developer in the U.S. is near $130,000, though closer to $175,000 in cities such as San Francisco and New York, according to data from global recruitment agency Robert Half. In the U.K., a developer’s average salary is about $66,000.

Insights from the 2024 Dice Tech Salary Report reveal the fastest-growing tech salaries! Systems administrators stole the spotlight with an impressive 11.2% salary increase from 2022 to 2023, resulting in an average salary of $94,597. Software developers and program analysts/managers also saw significant growth of more than 6%. Considering the average tech salary slightly dropped $155 in 2023 — making it $111,193 — an 11.2% salary increase is amazing. Below are my observations and calculations regarding the ongoing demand for staff augmentation. How it's stealing the limelight? Because... Hiring a full-time resource in Canada can cost a company thousands of dollars annually, factoring in salary, benefits, and overhead costs. For example, hiring a software developer in Canada might cost around $80,000 to $100,000 per year. However, by utilizing third-party companies, businesses can significantly reduce these expenses. Outsourcing the same software development tasks to a reputable third-party firm, especially one located in a region with lower labor costs, could cut expenses by 30% to 50%. Software developer employment is down and the trend started before the end of the ZIRP era, heck, before 2020, according to an analysis of ADP data by my ADP Research Institute® colleague Jeff Nezaj. Is it because of outsourcing to keep costs down? Is it because computer science talent is gravitating toward software-developer-adjacent occupations? Is it our operational definition of software developer? Some combination of those? Something else? We don't know yet, we just know that software developer employment as we've (fairly robustly) defined it is down. But share your thoughts in the comments. P.S. We do know that the vast majority of job switching among software developers for whom we could observe job switching was to other software developer jobs, and that (if representative of all job switching, which we can't observe in ADP data when someone moves to a job at an employer who isn't an ADP client) the rate of switching to other jobs could not on its own explain the downward trend in developer employment.

Idea of the day: 1–2 years is very little 1. Turnover has increased so much that programmers now work in companies for only 1–2 years. Of which they spend up to six months just to get up to speed and start working at full capacity ☹️ And this also depends on the state in which the programmers leaving the company left their work. 2. It turns out that companies have become critically in need of platforms that would support the “circle of programmers in nature” - that is, they would help in the transfer of work and knowledge from resigning employees to newly hired ones. 3. Since the number of programmers is already about 30 million, this is a huge market.
