Innovation in Pumped Energy Storage

About us

RheEnergise is bringing fresh innovation to the world’s dominant form of storage: pumped hydro storage. We call our solution High-Density Hydro®. HD Hydro® uses our proprietary HD Fluid R-19 which has 2.5x the density of water. It is environmentally benign, non-toxic, non-corrosive, and non-reactive. R-19 gives RheEnergise projects 2.5x the power and 2.5x the energy when compared to water. Unlike traditional pumped hydro energy storage, HD Hydro can operate using smaller hills as opposed to needing mountains. As a result, it opens up vastly more options in terms of potential sites. The technology is sized in the range of 10MW to 50MW, and 20MWh to 100MWh. HD Hydro is the best option for meeting society’s energy storage needs; compared to the competition it is agile and fast to deploy, massively scalable, has low impact, low cost, and low risk. RheEnergise consists of a highly experienced team with a strong track record in renewable energy, engineering, finance and bringing innovation to market.

Proud to see #PumpedHydro fulfilling the majority of the demand pick up at half time in last night's #Euro2024 game. These charts are a great reminder of the complexities involved in predicting and balancing supply and demand in real time and why #energystorage is a non negotiable.

🦁 Take a look at how demand for electricity in Great Britain fluctuated during last night’s #Euro2024 Spain vs England final and how this compared to the Italy vs England Euro 2020 final. ⚽ Last night, demand began to fall before the 8pm kick-off and continued to do so until half time. We experienced a rapid demand pick up of 1300MW at half time which we fulfilled using 700MW of hydro 💧, 400MW of batteries 🔋 and increasing conventional units already running. As the second half kicked off, demand for electricity fell until the full time whistle where we experienced demand increase gradually by 600MW. During the Italy vs England final in 2020, you can see a sharp rise in demand at full time as the nation rushed to get refreshments in the short gap before extra time kicked off. Because last night’s final ended after 90 minutes the increase in demand was much more gradual.

We applaud the steps that the new Government is already taking to get to net zero. Mission Control, led by Chris Stark, will be an excellent way to focus activities across the nation.     Delivering clean power by 2030 is a big opportunity for UK companies. RheEnergise welcomes this challenge and the jobs it can bring. At the heart of net zero is grid flexibility, and in particular grid flexibility that is zero carbon. To achieve the flexibility and the energy security needed, the only solution is energy storage systems that cover short, medium and long durations. Not only are solutions needed, but solutions that can scale at the speed to meet the needs of the climate emergency, and the ambition of the government and the country.   Our asks: ⚡ Energy storage rapidly becomes its own asset class, so that it is recognised a solution to both excess generation and demand ⚡ Capacity market payments rewarding lower carbon assets ⚡ Grid priority and government support for low carbon assets that can alleviate system constraint the most in the 2030s ⚡ A merit order, based on price and carbon intensity is established for generation and flexibility #cleanenergy #2030 #missioncontrolforcleanpower #energystorage

A welcome announcement yesterday from the Labour government, ending the de facto ban on onshore wind. Increased deployment of onshore wind means more Long Duration Energy Storage is required. It's worth noting that the roughly twice-weekly cycles of wind need longer LDES durations than the daily cycles of solar. RheEnergise's HD Hydro® is a low-cost solution to balance renewables over long durations. This allows greater capture of the lower costs of renewables, while providing secure, flexible power supply to match demand.   In our opinion, anyone developing an onshore wind project should be considering co-located LDES to maximise the financial returns. #energystorage #LDES #onshorewind

🎉 Very exciting to see the end to the ban on onshore wind in England today!! 🎉 A long time coming and a victory for common sense. "These changes take effect today (8 July 2024). The government will confirm this position to Parliament on 18 July, following the State Opening. These changes will also be reflected in the forthcoming NPPF update." It's a cliché, but the hard work does really start now though - Restarting an industry will take time, but we do know there is strong interest from developers, businesses and communities already exploring sites in England. A clear mandate and target for onshore wind from this government will crucially also support the continued deployment of onshore wind in Scotland and Wales, bringing energy security, cost and climate benefits to the whole country, as well as local host communities, as we work hard to kick-start the pipeline in England #onshorewind #renewables #planning #onshore

We've wrapped up an awesome week of our friends and colleagues from the UK visiting us for a proper week of intense science! Peter Griffiths, Bruce Alexander and Zahra Alaei from Greenwich University, together with our own Lauren Goodfellow, got to see the of our new facility produce its first batch of high-density fluid. We promptly put the batch through our test rigs and chemistry lab for evaulation. This was more about commisioning our lab, but in the coming months it is going to be very busy, both for working on our core RheEnergise HD Hydro® technology and as part of our UK-funded EEF9 research project in partnership with Greenwich and Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter. This project will systematically evaluate even more alternative weighting agents for our High-Density Hydro, with a particular focus on circular economy.

We are pleased to share that RheEnergise’s HD Hydro technology was featured in Bloomberg’s recently published, inaugural “Long Duration Energy Storage Cost Survey” report.   👉 High-Density Hydro® was included in the ‘novel PHS’ category, which has the lowest CAPEX of all the technologies surveyed.   BloombergNEF, which surveyed seven #LDES technology groups and 20 technology types in this report, says the least expensive technologies are already providing cheaper storage than lithium-ion batteries for durations over eight hours. LDES technologies can add more #energystorage because the storage cost component is decoupled from the power cost component for LDES technologies, making them more cost-effective than Li-ion batteries for longer storage durations. 👉 Read the press release: https://lnkd.in/exvuzHTt
