Reading the stacktraces: "Pillow does not yet support Python 3.8" and "The headers or library files could not be found for zlib". If you go to the recommended URL, is says: "We don’t recommend trying to build on Windows. It is a maze of twisty passages, mostly dead ends." So your best bet is to downgrade to python 3.7 and do the "pip install Pillow".

Pillow 6.2.0 now supports Python 3.8 and has prebuilt wheels available.

Make sure you're using Python 3.8.0 final or later with pip 19.2 or later.

To upgrade:

python -m pip install --upgrade pip
python -m pip install --upgrade pillow

Reason for preferring python -m pip install over pip install:

To make sure you use the same Python version for pip and your script. See snarky.ca/why-you-should-use-python-m-pip

This did not work in my case, the root cause was the missing libraries as per vikas Tikoo's answer. Commented Oct 7, 2022 at 12:22

I had the same missing zlib issue on an old Ubuntu 18.04 VM.

The headers or library files could not be found for zlib,
a required dependency when compiling Pillow from source.

Installing the zlib dev package made it go further. It then hit similar issue for jpeg and png libraries.

This is what finally worked for me:

sudo apt install zlib1g-dev libjpeg-dev libpng-dev

  • I can confirm that this works for a pip install of pillow on Raspberry Pi OS 2022-04-04. Commented Jun 14, 2022 at 4:29
  • This also worked for me - simply upgrading pillow with pip did not ! This should be the accepted answer. Commented Oct 7, 2022 at 12:21
  • I got at this problem during installation of easyOCR at ubuntu 18.04, it helped a lot. 1000 thanks :-) Commented May 3 at 13:19

If you are using windows make sure python is 3.8 and pip v19.0. then use python -m pip install --upgrade Pillow to install v7. this worked for me

On Windows using MSYS2/MinGW
To build Pillow using MSYS2, make sure you run the MSYS2 MinGW 32-bit or MSYS2 MinGW 64-bit console, not MSYS2 directly.

The following instructions target the 64-bit build, for 32-bit replace all occurrences of mingw-w64-x86_64- with mingw-w64-i686-.

Make sure you have Python and GCC installed:

pacman -S \
    mingw-w64-x86_64-gcc \
    mingw-w64-x86_64-python3 \
    mingw-w64-x86_64-python3-pip \
    mingw-w64-x86_64-python3-setuptools

Then install Prerequisites on MSYS2 MinGW 64-bit with:

pacman -S \
    mingw-w64-x86_64-libjpeg-turbo \
    mingw-w64-x86_64-zlib \
    mingw-w64-x86_64-libtiff \
    mingw-w64-x86_64-freetype \
    mingw-w64-x86_64-lcms2 \
    mingw-w64-x86_64-libwebp \
    mingw-w64-x86_64-openjpeg2 \
    mingw-w64-x86_64-libimagequant \
    mingw-w64-x86_64-libraqm

Now install Pillow with:

python3 -m pip install --upgrade pip
python3 -m pip install --upgrade Pillow

It works for me.

After trying everything else, I Could resolve the issue by updating the python version from 3.8.9 to latest version(3.9.*).

Try pip install pillow and then python -m pip install pillow
