The Nazgûl (whose name comes from Black Speech "Ring-wraiths") were the most powerful of Sauron's servants. Deadly creatures of menace, they were also known as Ringwraiths, Black Riders, and The Nine. These evil minions were once mortal men with their own rings of power until they were corrupted by Saurons "One Ring".
Over time, the men became wraiths bound into his service.
