Gandalf, also known as Olórin, Tharkûn, and Mithrandir, is a wise and powerful Istar (Wizard) in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth novels The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. He was the leader of the Fellowship of the Ring and the holder of the Elven ring Narya. Further background on Gandalf may be found in The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth, both published posthumously by Tolkien's son Christopher.
