Today, we want to share another exciting news with you! Earlier this year, we launched the #ReGreenerationEU project, and we, at Placemaking Europe, are excited to be partners in this consortium of innovative urban regeneration initiatives. ReGreeneration Europe aims to implement greening and renaturing solutions across Europe’s key cities—Paris, Bucharest, Barcelona, and Alverca—and replicating these efforts to Gent, Ljubljana, Rome, Lappeenranta, and Segrate. It focuses on revitalising social housing districts, deprived areas, neglected spaces, abandoned sites, derelict industrial areas, brownfields, and other urban challenges. Our mission is to showcase how nature-based solutions enhance urban climate resilience, liveability, and social cohesion. ReGreeneration will also develop a Digital Twin system to advance urban planning and sustainability, aligning with EU climate goals. At Placemaking Europe, we support municipal districts to engage their communities in decision-making, ensuring interventions are tailored to local needs for lasting impact. We facilitate collaboration between European experts in green-based regeneration and municipal districts, providing both lead and replicator cities with specialised expertise and tools for effective knowledge exchange. C40 Cities, Arup, Chaire ETI - IAE Paris Sorbonne School, NHOOD, Universitatea Tehnică de Construcții București, UrbanizeHub, Viaverda, Climato Sfera, FabLab by Inetum by the 9 cities. #RegreenerationEU #Sustainability #digitaltwins #urbanregeneration #placemaking

Hello Placemakers! Here's an exciting recap of last month: In June, we joined our consortium partners in Lisbon for the ReGreeneration Europe meetup! Over three intensive days, we participated in knowledge sharing, presentations, workshops, and a site visit. This gathering provided a valuable opportunity to network and enhance our understanding of each other's commitment to achieving urban resilience and biodiversity protection. Through insightful exchanges with partners, lead cities, and replicator cities, we aimed to foster improved quality of life and sustainable urban development goals. A standout moment of the meetup was our visit to Alverca do Ribatejo, Vila Franca de Xira, in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. We were warmly welcomed by Mayor Fernando Paulo Ferreira, and had the chance to explore the NHOOD/ NHOOD Portugal project site, a showcase of public-private cooperation in neighbourhood regeneration. Following an enlightening discussion, the Placemaking Europe team facilitated a workshop on tools and best practices for social engagement and placemaking, featuring a mini live demonstration of the Place Game in the project area. During the Place Game, participants envisioned enhancements for accessibility, ownership, safety, and engagement of local economic stakeholders. The gathered findings will offer useful insights into the future of the project! A big thank you to all the participants who made this meeting productive and impactful, and an extended thank you to the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira and NHOOD Portugal for being fantastic hosts! #ReGreenerationEU #UrbanRegeneration #Sustainability #GreenCities #Placemaking

Earlier this year in May we launched an inspiring #InclusiveCity Kick-Off Event in the city of Vienna. Over three enriching days, we collaborated with consortium partners from across Europe to shape the future of Inclusive City. We engaged with the Urban Living Lab stakeholders from Austria, Norway, the Netherlands, Hungary, and Italy, and participated in various insightful workshops. Highlights included a site visit to Vienna's Donaukanal Urban Living Lab and an inspiring walking tour with Schwimmverein Donaukanal, learning more about their initiative to reclaim urban spaces through swimming. These activities helped us crystallise our vision, set clear goals, and develop strategic approaches for the project. Amidst the lovely weather, we were pleasantly surprised with an additional tour of LAUT – Landscape Architecture and Urban Transformation ’s Das Supergrätzl initiative in the 10th District of Vienna, inspired by Barcelona’s superblocks strategy. Thank you to Georg Wieser, for showing us around! A big thank you to all partners involved for making this event fruitful, and a special thanks to superwien urbanism zt gmbh for being exceptional hosts! This year, we launched the #InclusiveCity project, and we at Placemaking Europe are excited to be partners in this consortium of forward-thinking urban development initiatives. InclusiveCity aims to rethink placemaking and the 15-minute city concept through social inclusion, diversity, and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Building on the JPI Urban Europe project PlaceCity, we focus on developing tools, methods, and policies that support multi-generational and gender-inclusive use of public spaces, ensure access to urban waterfronts, and protect vulnerable groups from gentrification, touristification, and commercialisation. Five pilot projects (Urban Living Labs) in Budapest, Oslo, Rome, Rotterdam, and Vienna will address local challenges and SDGs, fostering a circular research and innovation process. Our role at Placemaking Europe enables us to translate on-site learnings into universal resources. By collaborating closely with local stakeholders and communities, we aim to distil practical knowledge for different urban contexts, contributing to a robust toolbox of methods and strategies for inclusive placemaking. As a leading network for placemaking in Europe, we will disseminate these resources widely, fostering exchange and collaboration among cities. We envision a future where cities worldwide draw on the collective wisdom generated by InclusiveCity to create more inclusive, vibrant, and sustainable urban spaces. superwien urbanism zt gmbh Eutropian, Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien, Schwimmverein Donaukanal, NTNU Faculty of Architecture and Design, FRAGMENT, SINTEF, Nuove Ri-Generazioni, AS Bastogi, KÉK-Kortárs Építészeti Központ / Contemporary Architecture Centre, Placemaking Europe, Breda University of Applied Sciences. #placemaking #criticalplacemaking #participation #15minutecity #socialinclusion #codesign

Slow money, big impact: How place-led frontrunners drive systemic change Three key takeaways from our session '𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝' at the Urban Future conference yesterday: 1. The importance of 𝙗𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙤𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 to merge bottom-up and top-down approaches based on mutual trust 2. The significance of 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 about others 3. The concept that place-led development and placemaking always 𝙛𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙨𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙮, meaning sustainable investment and revenue 𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙘𝙠 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙨. However they unmistakably add cultural, social, and economic value. It was a pleasure to share the stage with Lisette van Rhijn Hans Karssenberg Małgorzata Ćwikła, PhD and Janna Michael, and to learn more about their approaches and projects. While on stage I shared insights on how culture-led development adds cultural, social, and economic value to our cities, using different case studies from The Netherlands and abroad. All these frontrunners have one thing in common: everyone involved—municipalities, creative professionals, developers, property owners, and the local community—had a seat at the development table. The discussion with the audience afterward was immensely valuable, demonstrating the fast-growing interest in place-led development. Systemic change is happening! 😊 We need more frontrunners within municipalities, urban developers, and real estate investors. Do you feel inspired? Drop me a line below. Thank you Placemaking Europe for the invitation and the team of Urban Future. for organising this significant conference. #cultureleddevelopment #placeleddevelopment #placemaking #UF24 #placemakingeurope
