Over ons

MVRDV was set up in 1993 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. MVRDV engages globally in providing solutions to contemporary architectural and urban issues. A research based and highly collaborative design method engages experts from all fields, clients and stakeholders in the creative process. The results are exemplary and outspoken buildings, urban plans, studies and objects, which enable our cities and landscapes to develop towards a better future. Early projects by the office, such as the headquarters for the Dutch Public Broadcaster VPRO and WoZoCo housing for the elderly in Amsterdam lead to international acclaim. MVRDV develops its work in a conceptual way in which the changing conditions are visualised and discussed through designs, sometimes literally through the design and construction of a diagram. The office continues to pursue its fascination for and methodical research on density using a method of shaping space using the complex amounts of data that accompany contemporary building and design processes. The work of MVRDV is exhibited and published worldwide and has received numerous international awards. Seventy architects, designers and other staff develop projects in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative design process which involves rigorous technical and creative investigation. MVRDV works with BIM and has official in-house BREEAM and LEED assessors. Together with Delft University of Technology, MVRDV runs The Why Factory, an independent think tank and research institute providing an agenda for architecture and urbanism by envisioning the city of the future.

A diamond-encrusted façade that glitters in an infinite range of colours! This is the Tiffany & Co. store in Shanghai for which we have designed a jewel-inspired storefront! Located in the Taikoo-Li Qiantan shopping centre, the store’s façade evokes clear associations to Tiffany’s renowned jewellery designs with 6,988 handcrafted glass “diamonds”. The façade has low-energy, colour-changing LED lighting and can thus be lit in any colour, including the trademark Tiffany Blue®, with each colour being brought to life by the refractive effects of the glass diamonds. This was inspired by the bright and colourful light displays of Shanghai’s skyline. The idea was based on Tiffany’s identity and history. The project represents a continuation of MVRDV’s strategy for Tiffany façade designs. It pays homage to the brand’s heritage by placing an emphasis on concepts such as innovative materiality, a strong sense of three-dimensionality, and the ability to spark wonder in onlookers. The façade only uses mechanical connections, allowing it to be completely dismantled and its parts reused or recycled in the future. Each of these glass diamonds is 21 centimetres wide and 13 centimetres tall, weighing 1.5 kilograms. They are suspended on thin steel cables and placed to give a randomly scattered effect, thinning out for greater visibility where needed. How do we use housing as an opportunity to reactivate previously marginal parts of cities? On July 5 at Cityscape 24 - Upcycle Ancona, our senior project leader Cosimo Scotucci will discuss this question in relation to a number of MVRDV projects in Bordeaux, including the Bastide Niel masterplan and its development La Vallée Verte, as well as Ilot Queyries, itself a testbed for Bastide Niel. Cosimo's lecture will present the audience with a fresh perspective on how formerly peripheral spaces can be used, and how they provide the potential for a new urban vision. A rotating house, powered by a bicycle? Only in Almere Oosterwold! Designed by visual artist Joost Conijn, this hand-made, rotating house is one of the latest additions to neighbourhood of Oosterwold. It is warmed by the sun and can be rotated to face away from the sun when needed. And all of this simply by jumping on a bike and pedalling! The project was recently awarded with the Almere Architecture Prize 2024. Winy Maas supported the building application process, advocating for the project as a piece of art for the neighbourhood. The rotating house is part of the Almere Oosterwold neighbourhood, created according to a collective masterplan by MVRDV. Oosterwold is proposed as a radically liberated place where you have the right to define your own living space. Oosterwold celebrates individual desire. You can build whatever you want, in whatever shape you like. The neighbourhood is, however, based on common sense. You can do whatever you want, provided you do not harm others. By not only developing your own plot, but also all the necessary components around it such as infrastructure, energy supply, and public parks, you not only build your own home, but also contribute to the development of this part of Almere. The construction industry is the world’s heaviest polluter, with buildings responsible for 39% of global CO2 emissions. How can we enable the industry to bring down emissions and meet the Paris Agreement? Join us in Aix-en-Provence – or watch live online – on July 6 at Les Rencontres Écononomiques to find out more. Our partner Bertrand Schippan will be part of a panel discussion where he will discuss how the construction industry can do more to innovate and reduce its impact. Referencing projects such as Matrix ONE, Gaîté Montparnasse, and Tour & Taxis as examples of demountability, replacing concrete with other materials, and densification respectively, Bertrand will demonstrate how green buildings can deliver for both the industry and environment. MVRDV are proud to honour the legacy of Christopher Street Day and the Stonewall Riots. These events sparked a revolution for LGBTQIA+ rights and continue to inspire us to create inclusive and empowering spaces for all. Pre-Stonewall, the Netherlands abolished sodomy as a punishable offence in 1811. Shortly after, the Netherlands reduced the age of consent for same-sex relations to the same as heterosexuals in 1971, banned discrimination based on sexual orientation in the military in 1973, and was the first country to legislate equal marriage in 2001. However, having equal rights does not mean that everyone gets to enjoy them equally. Social safety, workplace, and housing discrimination continue to be an area of concern for Dutch LGBTQIA+ people, particularly for youth, people of colour, and people who are transgender, with almost half of the Dutch LGB population (the statistics don’t even measure transgender experiences to the same extent) almost never, or never, walking hand in hand with their partner in public (LGBT Monitor, 2022). To address this challenge, awareness of inequalities is key – as is applying this knowledge to create change. As designers working in the built environment, we believe we have a responsibility to build knowledge that can inform how we create buildings, public spaces, and communities where every individual is safe, as well as celebrated and embraced for who they are. We develop knowledge through our work. In 2020, MVRDV competed in Canada’s 2SLGBTQIA+ National Monument competition organised by the LGBT Purge Fund, Patrimoine canadien -- Canadian Heritage and National Capital Commission - Commission de la capitale nationale. Collaborating with Fathom Studio and Two Row Architect, our design concept’s inspiring form rises proud from the landscape, inviting all to "come in" to the power of community.

Laying the foundations for a much-needed campus!   On June 26, the foundation stone was laid at the site of LXK Campus, the mixed-use complex set to add office and residential space to a rapidly developing part of Berlin. Alongside representatives of Tishman Speyer, RB Real Berlin Projektentwicklung, CESA GROUP and MVRDV, the ceremony was conducted in the presence of Governing Mayor of Berlin Kai Wegner, together with his predecessors Klaus Wowereit and Michael Müller.   "The LXK Campus creates urgently needed space for living and working in a dynamic neighborhood here at Holzmarkt. The project offers a modern mix of residential and commercial space", said Kai Wegner. "With a sustainable energy concept and many green and active areas, the LXK Campus is a good example of how Berlin can continue to grow, what modern urban development looks like, and how we can achieve our ambitious climate goals together with Berlin companies."   Located in the Friedrichshain district, adjacent to Ostbahnhof, the development comprising approximately 61,200 square metres of rentable space will provide tenants and residents with spectacular views over Berlin’s city centre from rooftops and terraces adorned with abundant greenery. The LXK Campus has received a LEED Platinum pre-certification and Germany's Good Mobility Council has also provided platinum pre-certification for the mobility concept, which includes more than 550 easily-accessible bicycle parking spaces on the ground floor, including for cargo bikes and e-charging stations. Want to see a sneak preview behind the scenes of Portlantis? Check the video below! On June 6, the Port of Rotterdam with their development partner EIC Mainport Rotterdam officially received the keys from contractor G. van der Ven B.V. Aannemingsbedrijf for the exhibition space and visitor centre Portlantis! The symbolic ceremony marked the technical completion of the building. The next stage for the project will involve the completion of the interiors and the installation of the Kossmanndejong-designed exhibition before the building opens in the Spring of 2025. Portlantis is an exhibition space and visitor centre for the Port of Rotterdam. Located at the port’s western-most point, on the artificially reclaimed sands of the Maasvlakte 2, the twisting five-storey stack of spaces will give spectacular views while educating visitors about the port’s function and evolution during one of its most important transitions – the shift to sustainable, low-energy operations. What happens if the Netherlands ends up underwater? With the publication "WHAT-IF: Nederland 2100", we give shape to the dilemmas of the 21st century! Together with IMOSS and Feddes/Olthof, we investigated the difficult decisions the Netherlands is likely to face in the coming century. We outlined visions showing how the country can learn to live with nature, provide housing and quality of life, protect its cultural heritage, and adapt its economy to a new normal. Investigating extreme scenarios, we imagined a future where the Dutch have to stop fighting the encroaching sea and learn to live with the water. This dramatic storyline demonstrated that even the most challenging conditions can be dealt with, as long as bold choices are made in plenty of time. As a result, the country becomes divided between "water-logged cities" in the west and higher, drier "sand cities" in the east, which become hyper-dense to accommodate a growing population. Historic city centres in the west would be protected with high dikes, while post-war neighbourhoods outside the dikes adapt to a new life living in harmony with the water. Rooftop extensions compensate for the flooded ground floors, while a new network of walkways will connect the buildings. "What we hope to communicate in this study is an idea of what’s possible", says Winy Maas. "Right now, we need a total switch in our understanding of what seems normal and sensible, and what seems foolish and untenable." "WHAT-IF: Nederland 2100" was commissioned by Platform Ontwerp.NL, an advocacy platform made up of a collaboration between the Dutch professional organisations for architects (BNA), engineers (Koninklijke NLingenieurs), urban planners (BNSP), landscape architects (NVTL), and interior designers (BNI Beroepsvereniging Nederlandse Interieurarchitecten), along with the Federatie Ruimtelijke Kwaliteit and the Vereniging Deltametropool. The study was presented on June 3rd to Irene Jansen, Director of Space and Living Environment at the Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties. Our project Nieuw Bergen in Eindhoven is well underway! Developer VolkerWessels made a vlog featuring this residential development in the heart of the city. Amber Nijhof interviews Ferdinand P.M. Gremmen and Mark Janssens of SDK Vastgoed B.V., alongside our very own Jacob van Rijs. Nieuw Bergen is a contemporary and progressive residential development combining urban and green qualities in Eindhoven’s Bergen neighbourhood. It is set to become a unique part of the city centre of Eindhoven and combines the values of renovated and transformed buildings with new constructions. The 29,000 square metres project of seven buildings will include 237 new homes, commercial programs, and urban farming. "I think the project nicely illustrates Eindhoven’s development, from a more historically small-scale city to a more metropolitan one," says Jacob van Rijs. "With Nieuw Bergen, we connect everything at once. Transitioning from a traditional building with beautiful brickwork that already stands there, to structures that are progressively taller and more modern. But together, it still forms a cohesive whole." Watch the video below and read more on the project here! https://lnkd.in/g9_bk4c5 Artist impressions by WAX Architectural Visualizations
