Starfleet uniforms in 2401

By 2401, the standard Starfleet uniform was replaced by a new iteration. (PIC: "The Star Gazer")

Standard duty uniform[]

While similar to the previous version, this uniform top had a breast flap similar to those on the early 2380s uniform. Additionally, there was no outer turtleneck, rank insignia were again placed on the collar, and division-colored piping was present on the side of the trousers. (PIC: "The Star Gazer", "Farewell", "The Next Generation")

Aside from the main three division colors, officers working in special services, such as cooks, wore uniforms with gray-colored shoulders. (PIC: "The Last Generation")

Undershirt[]

The uniform undershirt was almost entirely black, with the exception of a thin, division-colored border between the shoulder and chest areas. (PIC: "Seventeen Seconds", "No Win Scenario")

Captain's variant[]

The captain's variant uniform appeared to have a simpler configuration than previous versions. These uniforms featured a zippered jacket that was mostly gray in color, with a division-colored shoulder area that had golden-brown piping beneath it. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

Maternity uniform[]

Female officers going through pregnancy could wear a variant uniform that accommodated their growth during their child's development. (PIC: "The Star Gazer")

Flag officer uniform[]

The flag officer uniform was identical to the standard duty uniform except for the addition of gold piping across the chest and sleeves. Flag officers wore two copies of their rank insignia, one on either side of their collar. (PIC: "The Star Gazer")

Dress uniform[]

The dress uniform jacket was mostly black, with minimal division coloring on the shoulders and along the neck. Unlike the standard duty uniform, rank insignia were arranged vertically, rather than horizontally. (PIC: "Imposters")

The version worn by commodores had additional division coloring on the collar, while the version worn by admirals had golden piping along the inner shoulders. (PIC: "The Bounty", "Võx")

This uniform type was identified as a dress uniform by costume designer Michael Crow. [1] It is more in keeping with the contemporary, real world dress blues of the US Navy. The type B dress uniform previously introduced in Star Trek: Insurrection was more in keeping with the various forms of navy dinner dress uniforms.

Cadet uniform[]

The version of the cadet uniform in use by 2401 was mostly gray with a red shoulder area, similar to the ones worn during the late 2360s. (PIC: "The Star Gazer")

Field jacket[]

This leather jacket could be worn by Starfleet officers on away missions. It was mostly black, with minimal division coloring on the shoulders, in darker shades than on standard duty uniforms. Rank insignia were displayed vertically. (PIC: "The Bounty", "Surrender")

Accessories[]

Gloves[]

Some officers wore black gloves with their standard duty uniforms. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

Starfleet top ranking officers' combadge[]

Admiral Jean-Luc Picard with a top ranking officers' combadge

As the Chancellor of Starfleet Academy, Admiral Picard wore a distinctive combadge on a day-to-day basis when at the academy, as well as when visiting active duty starships. Fleet Admiral Shelby also wore the same style of combadge when she led the celebrations on Frontier Day.

The badge displayed the Starfleet delta in a golden laurel wreath design on a red and white-striped horizontal backing. As such, the design of the Top Ranking Officers' badge heavily resembled that of the badge worn with the Starfleet uniform from the late 2270s to the 2350s.
