North was one of four cardinal directions on a compass, opposite to south.

In 1836, during the Battle of the Alamo, the Mexican Army, under the command of Antonio López de Santa Anna, came over the north wall of the Alamo and defeated the defenders of the Alamo. Centuries later, when studying the battle by using a scale model of the Alamo compound, Julian Bashir considered strengthening the north wall, the south wall, and any other place of the Alamo so as to keep the enemy out and give the defenders of the Alamo a chance of winning. In 1957, after learning that T'Mir was leaving Carbon Creek, Jack asked him where he was going to. T'Mir responded, "Home. Up north." and, later in the conversation, Jack wished T'Mir good luck in the north. (ENT: "Carbon Creek")

In 1968, on a stretch of Highway 949 ten miles north of McKinley Rocket Base, Agents 347 and 201 were killed instantly in an automobile accident. (TOS: "Assignment: Earth")

In 2151, the Enterprise NX-01 discovered an impact crater about five hundred kilometers north of the landing party's position on the planet Terra Nova. Created by a large asteroid hitting the planet approximately seventy years before the starship's visit, the crater had impact fractures going down nearly two thousand meters. The thermo-shock of this impact created a radioactive cloud which probably covered the northern hemisphere for over a year. During this time, poison rain fell upon the planet's surface. The debris cloud from the impact reached to a point where it was ten or twelve degrees north of the equator. The southern hemisphere was unaffected by the asteroid. (ENT: "Terra Nova")

During a visit by the Enterprise to the Skagaran colony in 2153, a stablehand asked Trip Tucker why he needed a horse. Tucker said that their horses perished several miles north of the stablehand's town from heat exhaustion. Later, when asked by Bethany where they were from, Captain Jonathan Archer said the landing party was from "up north, quite a ways". This was part of a cover story to hide the origins of the party. (ENT: "North Star")

In 2154, as the Enterprise approached Sphere 41, T'Pol ordered Travis Mayweather that when they had visual contact of the sphere the starship's heading should be set to latitude fifteen degrees north. Later, Travis confirmed the heading by saying "Fifteen degrees north". (ENT: "Zero Hour")

In 2366, when scanning the surface of Rana IV for survivors after the planet had been devastated in an attack instigated by the Husnocks, the USS Enterprise-D's sensors picked up an artificial structure at thirty seven degrees north and sixty two degrees east. Inside the structure, the sensors picked up the lifeforms of Kevin and Rishon Uxbridge. Later, when an away team was sent to the planet's surface, the first thing they did was a scan of the structure and its environs. The scans located one individual at the south end of the house, while the other individual was toward the north end. {TNG: "The Survivors")

In 2368, the sensors of the USS Enterprise picked up a small area of temporal disturbance on the surface of Devidia II. This area was located at forty two degrees seven minutes north by eighty eight degrees declination east. Later, in the area, Data moved ten meters north of his starting position so as to observe more closely the Devidians. The android was moving in a northerly direction, reporting his observations to the Enterprise, when a temporal disturbance of massive proportions transported him to late 19th century San Francisco. (TNG: "Time's Arrow")

In 2372, when planning a rescue mission to get two of her crewmembers out of a Mokra Order prison, Captain Kathryn Janeway asked Darod for information on the structure. He informed her there were access tunnels on the north side of the prison which would get her close to her crew. Before successfully transporting the USS Voyager crewmembers from the prison, the starship moved to a blind spot where the planet's sensor net could not maintain an accurate lock on their position. The Voyager positioned herself directly above a large magnetic storm over the northern magnetic pole. (VOY: "Resistance")
