South was one of four cardinal directions on a compass, opposite to north.

While discussions the fortification of compound surrounding The Alamo, Julian Bashir suggested that the palisade on the south wall needed to be made less vulnerable. Miles O'Brien, however, argued that the south wall wasn't the problem, as the Mexican Army came over the north wall. Bashir, agreed, but elaborated that "I say we strengthen the south wall, the north wall, and any other place that helps us keep the enemy out." O'Brien felt that with that strategy, "then it wouldn't be the battle of the Alamo, would it," but Bashir didn't care because "[he] just want[ed] to win, once." (DS9: "The Changing Face of Evil")
