Today we dive into international co-operation under the Paris Climate Agreement – Article 6 with our VP of Policy Helen Bray! We’ve been looking at how the world might trade carbon as it seeks to reach net-zero emissions, as Article 6 of the Paris Climate Agreement says “Parties recognize that some Parties choose to pursue voluntary cooperation in the implementation of their nationally determined contributions to allow for higher ambition in their mitigation and adaptation actions and to promote sustainable development and environmental integrity.” IETA have a great visualisation of what is currently agreed and the countries looking to use cooperative approaches under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. https://hubs.ly/Q02G8CKw0 Article 6 creates Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) and implements procedures so that only one country reports the outcome, this is called a corresponding adjustment. This is important as the Paris Agreement doesn’t cover international aviation or international maritime. Therefore, any ITMO used for international aviation under the Carbon Offsetting an Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) will be only reported by airline operators. https://lnkd.in/dyYjbDR We have procedures on Article 6 and look forward to enabling this for our CO2 Removal Suppliers. We have applied for assessment by the Technical Advisory Body under  International Civil Aviation Organisation for CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) to be recognised as CORSIA Eligible Emissions Units and await the outcome of this process before the end of this year. Within this podcast we highlight: that 145 Governments have or are considering adopting a net-zero target https://hubs.ly/Q02F_7PF0 And also share three key enablers to support durable carbon removals: ✅ For voluntary carbon market rule-setters, let’s recognize the role that high integrity carbon removal credits can play and support this happening now so durable carbon removal technologies can scale this decade. ✅ As Governments update their national pledges (Nationally Determined Contributions) going into COP30 please include a target for durable carbon removal, and therefore pave the way for Governments to set investable policy frameworks for durable carbon removal; and ✅ If a government has compliance regime, such as an emissions trading system, how can they be re-designed to deliver net-zero or net-negative emissions and please partner with the voluntary carbon markets registries, such as Puro, and set strict criteria for high quality durable carbon dioxide removal.

Today we will dive into Emissions Trading Systems with our VP of Policy Helen Bray! 🌟 Emissions Trading Systems have a cap on emissions which determines the volume of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which can be emitted, and puts a price on pollution for the companies who wish to buy allowances to emit GHGs under the cap. There is trading of allowances, and hence emissions trading systems can be called cap-and-trade systems. In summary, the cap on emissions delivers the environmental outcomes, and the trade of allowances enables a least-cost approach to deliver the cap on emissions. It was great to discuss the EU ETS last week with the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Carbon Gap whether and how to integrated durable CDR under the EU ETS. https://hubs.ly/Q02Fyx7f0 We’d like to share that we believe that durable CDR could be included now under Article 24 of the EU ETS whereby an EU Member States can opt in activities. Is there a CO2 removal supplier and a Member State who would like to include a CO2 removal facility in their EU ETS? Throwing ideas out there as we look at what is possible under the current framework.
