What a pleasure to see so many (magnetic and laser) fusion enthusiats from 35 German companies, including 4 start-ups that are active in fusion research, 25 Fraunhofer Institutes as well as Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Jülich Research Center (FZJ), and the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) at the "Nuclear Fusion" industry day in Munich from June 10-11, 2024. The event was the kick-off to further develop and industrialize key technologies for magnetic and laser inertial confinement fusion, create supply chains and identify spill-over markets. This is expected to drive the technology, economies of scale and associated markets for fusion power plants and related use cases.

At our recent 'Labathon' in the Thin Film Processing Department at Fraunhofer ILT, researchers came together to explore their spontaneous and innovative ideas outside the constraints of daily routines. One of the experiments carried out focused on laser crystallization of temperature sensors in amorphous silicon layers. Exploiting the optical properties of silicon, large crystallization depths can be achieved with IR-lasers. Measurements over a wide range of temperatures provided an interesting outlook into the feasibility of multi-sensor integration on wafers and the future of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). Thanks to Tobias Brunner and Adam El-Sarout who organized the Labathon.

Thanks to LP. PRO - Fachmagazin for picking up the very important (as we think) topic of laser-based optics production in their newest article: "The optical industry relies on mechanical processes in its process chains. This could soon change. According to the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen, Germany, it is driving forward digitally controlled laser processes with clear time and cost advantages in the shaping, polishing and final shape correction of aspheres and free-form optics. According to the plans of the Fraunhofer ILT, this flexibility is to be brought into industrial application. Initially as individual laser-based processes and then, in the long term, as fully laser-based optics production, from shaping and polishing to nanometer-precise shape correction." THE DAWN OF LASER-BASED OPTICS PRODUCTION Meet our esperts to learn about laser-based manufacturing of optics @ Optatec Messe, May 14 to 16, 2024 in Frankfurt: Sandra Borzek, Emrah Uluz, Edgar Willenborg. The optical industry almost completely relies on mechanical processes in its process chains. This, however, could soon change. The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen is pushing ahead with digitally controlled laser processes that save both time and costs when aspheres and freeform optics are shaped, polished and their final shape is corrected. This laser-based process chain is based on shaping by ablation with ultrashort pulse (USP) lasers or Selective Laser-induced Etching (SLE), followed by laser polishing of the component as well as precision shape correction in the high-end sector. Fraunhofer ILT will be presenting the laser-based process chains of the future at the OPTATEC trade fair from May 14 to 16, 2024 in Frankfurt and at the 1st Aachen Conference “Laser-based Optics Production“ on October 15 to 16, 2024 (https://lnkd.in/eJcYyfzH).
