#AKL, a milestone once again for us! A bit more than a month ago, AKL – International Laser Technology Congress took place in beautiful Aachen. This was the second time the event has been strategic in the history (and story) of our product line! #AKL22 was my first AKL, the first Cailabs employee attending, and the first Cailabs employee stepping into Fraunhofer ILT. I came back with stars in my eyes, and it changed our product roadmap. My key learnings were: 🔸 Germany is big 🖤❤️💛 – Of course, I already knew this from market studies, but only in Aachen could I actually feel it. I adjusted my business trip organization to include much more of Germany, which I’ve enjoyed since (and which made me discover that in every single small German village someone is doing laser processing 😅 ). 🔸 The ILT is big – I was so impressed by the lab tour (I runned for 2 hours and still didn’t cover everything). We organized ourselves to try to collaborate more with them, and it’s great to see that 2 years later, we are working on our 3 main applications with the great Aachen teams! We came as a whole team to #AKL24, our first Cailabs booth, our first Cailabs talk, and our first time as finalists for the #InnovationAward (yes, we hope to be back 😁). What a journey it has been! The recognition of our work and innovations in Aachen is truly amazing. My key learnings this year were: 🔸 The main one is actually a validation that our primary focuses are indeed hot topics (improving quality in laser welding, increasing printing speed in LPBF, scaling up micro-processing) – I'm glad to see beam-shaping becoming a real trend. 🔸 AI is becoming more and more important! (Siri even made an appearance at the conference…) 🔸 And the whole community is looking at the start of Laser Fusion (Inertial Fusion), which may drive the industry in the coming decades. Last week, I attended the AKL – International Laser Technology Congress in Aachen. Most of the time, Darc Mavid Laura Vogeley and I were busy filming for the Fraunhofer ILT, but I wanted to soak up as much knowledge as I could from the sessions and presentations. This year, AI was the central theme at the AKL’24, just like it seems to be everywhere at the moment. While #AI often raises concerns about job security in the film industry, at the AKL’24, it was clear that in science, AI isn't just a source of worry. Quite the opposite. In the film industry AI can now nearly replace voice actors completely. And soon it might be able to produce entire films with just text input from a single person. These are tasks that used to require whole teams. It’s both fascinating and horribly alarming. However, in the context of science and research, AI represents a necessary step that can simplify and speed up processes. I got a glimpse into the future of AI and #lasertechnology, which was fascinating. From industry lasers to those used in agriculture to precisely target weeds, with AI ensuring it eliminates only the weeds, to medical lasers in fields like ophthalmology (which I have a personal connection to), where AI can not only prevent errors but also quickly diagnose conditions and suggest treatment strategies. And so much more. It was easy to get so wrapped up in the discussions that you almost forgot why you were there. In the end, we achieved our goal, capturing great footage of the Conference. Mission accomplished. It's Aachen again😀!
