Working in the Supply team at Supercritical involves engaging with #biochar carbon dioxide removal projects based all round the world that utilise different technologies, feedstocks and end-applications to sequester carbon permanently and generate carbon removal credits in the fight against climate change. What we've learned as a business from this continued engagement is that biochar is set to grow a massive 30x over the next four years, but 88% of the growth comes from low-quality credits. This is pretty worrying. One of the most important roles of the Supercritical marketplace is mapping the market and building the highest quality supply for the leading purchasers of carbon removal credits, so they can continue to have the highest impact and accelerate the growth of this critical technology. 🌿🍏 Unlocking SDG 3: Good Health & Well-being through Nutrition 🌍💪   SDG 3, "Good Health and Well-being," hinges on nutrition. Here's why it's crucial:   🍎 Nutrients & Health: What we eat shapes our health and eventually our life. Balanced nutrition is key for our well-being, while malnutrition can lead to health woes.   🍽️ Tackling Malnutrition: Sometimes malnutrition does not necessarily mean we have too little to eat, but it means there are too less digestible nutrients and vitamins in our food.   🚫 Loss in Nutrients: Traditional farming methods drain soil, which in turn leads to fruits, vegetables, and crops which has way less nutrients than a decade ago. So this means we would have to eat much more to receive the same nutrient value than a few decades ago.   🍲 Here are some figures that will make you gape: A study by Davis, Epp, and Riordan (2004), comparing USDA data from 1950 and 1999, found a decline of up to 38% in riboflavin (vitamin B2) in 43 different fruits and vegetables. A Canadian study noted a 30% decrease in the average vitamin C content in fresh produce compared to levels from the mid-20th century. A study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that the calcium content in vegetables has declined by about 16% over the past 50 years. A study by the Biochemical Institute at the University of Texas found that the average iron content in 12 fresh vegetables dropped by 37% between 1950 and 1999. The USDA reported that the average vitamin A content in fruits and vegetables has seen a reduction of about 21% over the last 70 years. The UK's Royal Society of Chemistry found that copper levels in vegetables decreased by 76% from 1940 to 1991. Research published in the Journal of HortScience found a 27% decrease in zinc content in commercially grown vegetables over the last 50 years. The University of Texas at Austin's research indicated a 15% reduction in essential minerals like magnesium, zinc, and potassium in various fruits and vegetables since 1950.   📚 Raising Awareness: Species that evolved over millennia have lost such a massive amount of nutrient content over the last few decades only.   At PyroCCS we strongly believe that biochar can turn the “nutrient tides” again in our favor.
