Researchers from the Cavalleri Group at the MPSD, ETH Zürich and the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research have developed a new experiment capable of monitoring the magnetic properties of #superconductors at very fast speeds. Characteristically, superconducting materials expel magnetic fields. Measuring this process has been challenging because the effect only persists for a few picoseconds (one trillionth of a second). The team managed to reconstruct the time evolution of the magnetic field surrounding the laser-irradiated YBa2Cu3O6+x sample with sub-picosecond resolution and unprecedented sensitivity. Its findings have been published in Nature / Nature Portfolio: https://lnkd.in/gmRb8ckC Authors: Sebastian Fava, Giovanni De Vecchi, Gregor Jotzu, Michele Buzzi, Thomas Gebert, Yiran Liu, Bernhard Keimer & Andrea Cavalleri #magnetism #superconductivity #optics #meissnereffect #physics #lightmatterinteraction #picosecond #science Image: Mid-infrared laser pulses coherently drive atomic modes in YBa2Cu3O6.48 and stabilize superconducting fluctuations at high temperature. This quantum coherence leads to the ultrafast expulsion of a static magnetic field. © Sebastian Fava, Jörg M. Harms

Forschungsdienstleistungen
We explore the fundamental make-up of matter with ultrafast light sources and groundbreaking theory.
Info
The Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) investigates non equilibrium phenomena in matter of all kinds. It studies these processes on all time and lengthscales, including at the extreme those of atomic and electron movements. The Institute is pioneering experimental methods that range from ultrafast laser techniques to electron and x-ray scattering, integrated with ultra-high speed electronics and advanced measurement and fabrication methods. Powerful theoretical modelling capabilities reveal the fundamental properties of materials. The MPSD is located in the research campus Bahrenfeld, where it occupies two buildings - its newly developed headquarters and shared space in the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science, where the MPSD collaborates with the University of Hamburg and DESY.

Check out these projects for undergraduate students in the Galler group! Anna Galler was a postdoctorate researcher in the MPSD's Theory Group before she went to Technische Universität Graz. :)
I am looking for motivated physics undergraduate students, who would like to do their master thesis in my research group at TU Graz.

AWARD NEWS We have some amazing news to start the week 😀 : Our founding director and head of the Condensed Matter Dynamics Department, Prof. Andrea Cavalleri, will receive the 2024 EPS Europhysics Prize from the European Physical Society! In awarding the honour, the EPS cites his "pioneering studies of photo-induced emergent phases of quantum materials: from enhanced superconductivity to the control of materials topology”. The EPS Europhysics Prize is one of the most prestigious European awards in the field of condensed matter physics. It will be presented to Prof. Cavalleri during the General Conference of the EPS Condensed Matter Division later this year.
