We have a new #postdoc opening in our Multiphysics Computation group at Argonne National Laboratory: High-fidelity Modeling for Scale-resolving Simulations of Power Generation and Propulsion Systems. This postdoctoral #research will be focused on performing #scalable #highfidelity #cfd simulations of practical #gasturbines and #ICEs (operating on low/zero-carbon fuels) using high-order spectral element method (SEM) and gaining insights into turbulent #combustion phenomena and #extreme event occurrence for #reduced-order modeling. For this opening, we are seeking recent #phd graduates with expertise in #CFD, high-order numerical methods/solvers, #turbulence, #reacting flows, and #hpc. Applied Physicists at Sioux are responsible for the core technologies of our products. Although the emphasis will often be on the early phases of a project, they are involved in the entire product creation process from the ideation of concept solutions and technology proof to industrialization. Applied physicists work on the development of optical systems, but also contribute to other challenges such as electron and x-ray physics, contamination, (ultra-)high vacuum and thermal design. How an engineer looks at problems and has a solution for them.

In the United States, university departments with a magnetic fusion and plasma physics focus have not shown much creativity in their hiring practices: faculty hired in these fields almost exclusively come from a fusion / plasma physics background. This is not the case in other engineering departments, where, for example, mechanical engineering faculty may have an applied mathematics background, or a background in oceanography, or in operations research. With these practices, departments focused on fusion and plasma physics miss on a wide variety of talents, and limit the potential for unexpected breakthroughs. It is interesting to see that magnetic fusion start-ups, because of their very high hiring needs, have had to look far beyond magnetic fusion and plasma physics for talents to hire, and have done so with success. At Type One Energy, I am impressed by the speed with which non-specialists learn the required fusion science and plasma physics, and how quickly they contribute decisively in our projects with their unique expertise.

Right now 3 Post-doc positions are open for application: 1. Neutron scattering Computer-data scientist Engineering material neutron diffractometer (EMD) is a dedicated engineering science facility at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), located at Dongguan, China. The EMD provides a world-class platform for measuring and analyzing the stress in large and complex engineering materials. The primary aim of this position is to develop a software solution for user-friendly and efficient, automatic processing of large numbers of TOF neutron diffraction datasets. The automated processing includes single peak fitting, interpolation and a fundamental analysis for strain/stress visualization, texture pole figure calculation. In addition to developing workflows for streamlining common tasks, you will have the opportunity to engage with users and staff to develop new ways for working with their data that enable them to translate their measurements more effectively into knowledge. 2. Instrument Scientist (Neutron Scattering) The primary aim of this position is to ensure safe operation and user support of the beamlines. You will act as a local contact for users, including helping with experimental setup, data acquisition and data analysis. You will have the opportunity to work with users on a wide range of science topics covered by the instruments. It is expected that you pursue your own research program, focusing on neutron scattering capabilities. 3. Material Scientist The three-dimensional residual stress multiscale characterization technique using neutrons and synchrotron radiation diffraction has received funding from the National Key R&D Program. The development of this characterization technique will be based on the study of a class of pearlitic steels. The advanced perlite steels were chosen as base materials for high speed railway wheels production. The changes in the microstructure of these materials under high-cycle fatigue, the evolution of second-type residual stresses in pearlite and ferrite, and their relationship with macroscopic fatigue behavior will be systematically studied. The results obtained will provide support for the development of the characterization technique and also offer a basis for the selection of production materials and the optimization of manufacturing processes for high-speed train wheels.
