🌍𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲🌍 The European Union is spearheading efforts to integrate renewable hydrogen into its energy mix as a vital component of its decarbonization strategy. The recent report by the European Court of Auditors highlights both the progress and challenges in this ambitious journey. 🔹 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: 1. 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀: The EU's Hydrogen Strategy and REPowerEU plan set ambitious goals for hydrogen production and imports, aiming for a total of 20 million tons of Hydrogen produced and imported by 2030. 2. 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Over €18.8 billion has been allocated for hydrogen projects from 2021-2027, primarily through the Recovery and Resilience Facility and the Innovation Fund, with initiative such as the Hydrogen Bank which specifically support projects producing renewable Hydrogen. 3. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀: Despite the progress, the targets are deemed overly ambitious without robust analysis, and member states' alignment with these targets varies. 4. 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸: While the legal framework is largely in place, its impact on market development remains uncertain. Permitting processes and state aid rules have been expedited, but practical implementation by member states is crucial. 5. 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: There is a need for better coordination both within the Commission and with member states and industry to ensure unified progress towards the hydrogen economy. EU's Industrial Policy on Renewable Hydrogen: The EU’s hydrogen strategy focuses on fostering a market for renewable hydrogen, crucial for decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors. The Commission is working on aligning efforts across member states, addressing funding challenges, and streamlining regulations to support this transition. This symposium, taking place from July 15 to 17 in Pretoria, focuses on "Moving the Needle on Climate Change and Just Transition: The Role of the National Treasury." President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to deliver the keynote address at this pivotal event, which brings together top-tier leaders including Ministers, Deputy Ministers, senior government officials, academia, the private sector, and climate experts. The symposium aims to integrate climate goals into macro-fiscal and finance policies, enhance governmental coordination by embedding climate change considerations into the intergovernmental fiscal system, and showcase the pivotal role of the National Treasury in advancing climate action. 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲: 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗚𝗥𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗦𝗥𝗦 The European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will expand mandatory sustainability disclosures to over 50,000 companies, with detailed reporting on environmental, human rights, and social standards covering fiscal year 2024. The European Sustainability Reporting Standard (ESRS), developed by the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG) and adopted by the European Commission in 2023, outlines the requirements for companies to report on sustainability impacts, opportunities, and risks. As one of the most widely recognized global standards for sustainability reporting, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) helps ensure consistent communication across industries. Following a major update in 2021, GRI has recently proposed new climate change, energy, and biodiversity reporting standards. Due to GRI and EFRAG's collaboration, there is a high interoperability between ESRS and GRI Standards, allowing greater alignment for sustainability reporting. GRI has introduced the GRI-ESRS Interoperability Index to prevent double reporting for companies disclosing under both systems. For more industry-related updates, follow Brundtland. 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝟭.𝟱°𝗖 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲-𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟭𝟮 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀  From July 2023 to June 2024, global temperatures soared to record highs, as revealed by data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service. This marks a year-long sustained period where the Earth’s temperatures averaged 1.64°C hotter than preindustrial times. This trend emphasizes a significant and ongoing shift in our climate. New records are likely unless greenhouse gas emissions are significantly reduced.  The rise in temperatures underscores the growing risks from extreme weather events. Experts noted that each fractional degree increase worsens the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and human communities. While this record does not directly impact 1.5°C by 2050 target, there is clear urgency to accelerate efforts to mitigate climate change. Let's stay informed and committed to sustainable actions. 𝗨𝗡 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿"𝟭.𝟱°𝗖 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴" 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 At a side event during the UN climate talks in Bonn, the Conference of Parties (COP) presidencies of the UAE, Azerbaijan and Brazil emphasized the need for upcoming national climate plans (NDCs) to adhere to a 1.5°C global warming limit. These COP presidencies have committed to lead by example, pledging to publish "1.5-aligned" plans by early next year. There is ambiguity surrounding what qualifies as a "1.5-aligned" NDC, as there is no internationally agreed methodology for this determination, leaving it up to individual countries. According to the IPCC aligning with 1.5°C plan means reducing global emissions by 43% by 2030 and 60% by 2035. However, there are national breakdowns provided to support this goal. While there may be disagreements on what constitutes a 1.5-aligned NDC, such plans must exclude any expansion of fossil fuel production and exports.  No government took the opportunity in Bonn to release an early NDC. 𝟭.𝟱°𝗖 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹: 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝟱𝟬% 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗗𝗣 Results from the 2023 CDP responses reveal a significant increase of 44% in the number of companies reporting 1.5°C-aligned climate transition plans. This increase highlights the growing importance of transition planning in companies. Having a transition plan not only showcases climate credibility but is also seen as a crucial feature for accessing capital, driving efficiency, and meeting regulatory demands. Transition plans are time-bound action plans outlining how a company’s assets, operations, and business model will transition to achieve a 1.5°C-aligned decarbonization pathway. CDP's questionnaire includes 21 indicators to support companies' disclosure which covers climate elements such as governance, emissions reporting, strategy, financial planning, and value chain engagement. Around 39% of companies disclose the majority of key indicators (14 of 21) with around 1% fully disclosing all 21 indicators.  As emphasized by the CEO of CDP with more companies disclosing climate transition plans through CDP in 2023, it is clear that forward-looking commitments are essential for building market confidence. Companies disclosing consistently are developing more credible and effective transition plans essential for navigating a net-zero future. 🌍 Join the movement towards sustainability.
