The third working group of the IPCC focused on mitigation and climate change. There's a rapidly closing window to cut emissions in order to keep within 1.5C. First, as of time of issuing report, 80% of the carbon budget for 1.5 had already been used. Only 20% remained. Also, peaking of emissions needed to happen between 2020-2025. That's yet to happen. It is of course better to remain below 1.5 than overshoot and come back later. These are some of the insights from the report, the rest of which I summarized below. The third working group report of the IPCC focused on mitigation of climate change, and unlike other times, this was multidisciplinary, involving even social sciences. The window we have for cutting greenhouse emissions is narrowing, and the benefits or consequences of either action or inaction will be felt by both present and future generations. The scale of action needed is unprecedented, but the speed has been seen before. We are also very likely to overshoot 1.5 degrees and coming back requires concerted effort. I wrote an extensive but precise summary of this part of the sixth assessment report. See: #AR6 #climatechange #climateaction #mitigation #climateeducation https://lnkd.in/dwnpkKnS

One of the reports the IPCC released as part of its sixth assessment cycle was on mitigation of climate change. Mitigation is the cutting, avoidance or absorption of green house gas emissions. The goal is to keep within 1.5 and 2C. I summarized the report, including the different pathways to achieving this. See: #mitigation #climatechange #climateaction https://lnkd.in/dwnpkKnS

The third working group of the IPCC centred on mitigation of climate change, in their contribution to the sixth assessment report. They look at where we are, and where we need to be in light of the 1.5 and 2C temperature goals of the Paris agreement. Also, they look at it sector by sector, and moreover, the report is multidisciplinary; professionals from different sectors including social sciences are involved. Understanding the Vital Difference Between Climate Mitigation and Climate Adaptation In the face of accelerating climate change, it has become increasingly imperative for societies worldwide to develop effective strategies to confront its impacts. Two key approaches have emerged in this battle: climate mitigation and climate adaptation. While both are vital components of any comprehensive response to climate change, they differ significantly in their objectives, methodologies, and timelines. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for policymakers, businesses, and individuals alike as they navigate the complex landscape of climate action. #ClimateChange #ClimateMitigation #ClimateAction #SDGs #ESG #Sustainability #SDGs2030 #CSR https://lnkd.in/eRKfRMQb

1.5°C pathways can still be achieved, combining fairness and global climate protection - PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research: Global warming can still be limited to 1.5°C by 2100 while ensuring that the poor are not hit hardest by climate policies and climate impacts. This is achieved by immediately introducing broad carbon pricing together with re-distributive policies using carbon pricing revenues and further measures to reduce energy consumption, accelerate technological transitions, and transform the land sector. The results from multiple integrated assessment models (IAMs) show that a combination of producer and consumer-oriented measures can work together to rapidly reduce emissions. The comprehensive results on 1.5°C pathways in line with the Paris Agreement are synthesised in a report of the European project NAVIGATE. The new report presented at COP28 provides a blueprint for achieving a rapid, fair and efficient transformation to net zero emissions. https://lnkd.in/gvjdCBr7

A powerful new report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) lays bare the devastating reality and risks posed by the climate crisis, and the ways in which the world must respond. Krista Singleton-Cambage, said: “This report underscores the massive gap between what the world needs and what countries including Australia are currently doing to reduce emissions. “WWF-Australia commissioned research that found Australia needs to slash its emissions by 74% by 2030 and reach net zero emissions by 2035 to do our fair share to help limit warming to 1.5°C. We urge the Australian Government to take all opportunities to reduce our emissions, in line with current science, and increase our resilience to address the impacts of climate change. “Australia can play a central role here, particularly with our bid to host the COP31 climate talks with the Pacific. We have what it takes to build a world-leading renewables industry, phase out fossil fuel exports, and become a global leader on climate action.” Find out more: wwfau.org/3lu72ks #IPCC #climateactionnow

Greenhouse gas emissions are on track to rise by 9% by 2030, despite years of warnings from scientists that climate tipping points may be near. Emissions would need to fall by 43% by the decade’s end to meet the Paris climate agreement goal of capping global heating at 1.5C.

Last week, we convened at our 10th Australasian Emissions Reduction Summit around the themes Reform, Repair & Race to 1.5C. This was against the backdrop of the UNFCCC releasing the advanced distribution of the Technical Dialogue of the first global stocktake under the Paris Agreement, which highlighted that we are currently in line with a 2.8C warming trajectory. At the Summit, UNFCCC Secretary-General Simon Stiell noted that COP28 "will be a critical opportunity to course-correct and build climate stability and resilience. [We must] keep the climate agenda front and centre… push for greater ambition and faster action at COP28 and beyond.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gxybxE4c #AERSummit #unfccc #ParisAgreement #GST #globalstocktake #carbonabatement #carbonmarkets #carbonfarming #carboncredits #emisisonsreduction #climateaction #climatechange #climatefinance #climatepolicy #netzero #netnegative
