It has been a privilege to play a founding role in the new Humanitarian Payments Council - launched this week in Barcelona - whose goal is to advise the United Nations and NGOs on blockchain for aid payments in fragile and vulnerable settings. The Forum for Innovation in Humanitarian Payments (https://lnkd.in/em6c9pFj) at PoliSync Centre for International Policy Engagement looks forward to contributing evidence-based research, multi-stakeholder engagement and capacity building to the work of the Council, led by Algorand Foundation, which also includes UNDP, World Food Programme, Circle, Mercy Corps, Worldpay and HesabPay.
The Algorand Foundation leads a coalition to form the Humanitarian Payments Council with Circle, Worldpay, Mercy Corps, UNDP, HesabPay and more, aiming to revolutionize aid delivery using blockchain technology. The Council’s goal is to advise United Nations agencies and NGOs on using blockchain for aid payments, ensuring secure, transparent, and traceable delivery. Furthermore, they will develop a roadmap of blockchain-based cash programs in distressed areas. Built on Algorand, HesabPay is showing how well blockchain can work for aid delivery. It supports the largest humanitarian project on a public blockchain, helping over 14,000 families in Afghanistan with the World Food Programme and WFP Innovation Accelerator Bernhard Kowatsch from WFP Innovation Accelerator says, “HesabPay’s success in Afghanistan shows the impact and scalability of this tech. We aim to expand these innovations globally to improve aid delivery.” The serving council members currently include: 🟢 Sandra Uwantege Hart, Humanitarian Venture Lab Lead at Mercy Corps Ventures 🟢 Mercina Tillemann Perez, Vice President, Circle Impact at Circle 🟢 Paula Gil Baizan , PoliSync Centre for International Policy Engagement 🟢 Ahmed Zifzaf, Head of Crypto/Web3 Partnerships at Worldpay 🟢 Hasan Fallaha, Livelihoods and Economic Recovery Programme Analyst at UNDP Syria 🟢 Ali Theyab Al-Zuhairi, Economic Reform (FFER-FED) Project Coordinator at the UNDP Iraq Country Office 🟢 Robert Pasicko, Expert for Alternative Finance, UNDP 🟢 Henri de Jong, Chief Business Development Officer at Quantoz 🟢 Rory Crew, Technical Advisor on Data & Digitalization at the CALP Network 🟢 Nigel Pont, Senior Advisor at HesabPay 🟢 Suzana Maranhão Moreno, Blockchain Technology Strategy and Portfolio Project Manager at WFP Innovation Accelerator 🟢 Kelly Stablein, Independent Humanitarian Consultant
