Let us introduce to you the Neringa Forest Architecture project, which made it as a finalist for the New European Bauhaus Prizes 2024 in the Reconnecting with Nature category.   Neringa Forest Architecture seeks to enhance how society negotiates and understands long-term forest sustainability 🌲🌳. The Lithuanian 🇱🇹 project explores the balance between forest use and biodiversity through research and cultural collaboration.   Timber from the Curonian Spit forest, typically shredded for biofuel, was repurposed to build the Natural Timber Seasoning Shed, an archive of wood supporting the artistic and research residency programme in the town of Nida.   Moreover, over three years, the project collected timber to construct The Children’s Forest Pavilion, an educational playscape that acknowledges children’s unique perspectives and observations of the forest, emphasising our connection to it.   What are your thoughts on using cultural and architectural practices to enhance forest sustainability? 🌍 We need to build less to limit the consumption of natural resources 🤝 We need to connect more to counteract social isolation 💪 We need proof of our capacity to change to overcome feelings of helplessness   These are the driving philosophies behind YesWeCamp, a project from 🇫🇷 that reimagines how people live and socialise by transforming available spaces.   Yes We Camp creates innovative sites, typically made available free-of-charge by public authorities for a limited time period, and involves participants in the design and management process. This way, they help extend the lifespan of existing spaces 🏢, offering an alternative to the construction of new buildings on undeveloped land. The project adapts its skills and services to meet each site's specific needs, local priorities, and shared vision with partners. This includes supporting vulnerable populations, offering emergency housing and community kitchens, workshops for artists and craftspeople, family-friendly outdoor areas, greening projects, biodiversity initiatives, and hosting local initiatives and cultural events.   Since 2017, Yes We Camp has taken on the management of between 5 and 10 sites at any given time, representing a combined surface area of 10,000m² to 20,000m² of building space and 20,000m² to 100,000m² of outdoor space.   🏆 In recognition of their successful approach, Yes We Camp was awarded as runner-up of the New European Bauhaus Prizes 2024. #NewEuropeanBauhaus #DesignForAll #PublicSpace   📷 © Yes We Camp, 2024. Last month, CEiiA // Centre of Engineering and Product Development in Portugal, winner of the 🏆 2021 NEB Prizes, hosted the final event of "NEBbyAYR - Artistic Manifestos for Sustainability," a social movement led by young people to transform cities through sustainability, arts, and technology. Over 400 students from 21 schools exhibited their "manifestos," showcasing their visions for a sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful future. Artists collaborated with students to create 🎨 posters; 🎭 school theatre sessions provided a platform for much-needed discussions about a better future. The highlight of the event was a green mural created by students under the guidance of artist Diogo Machado, which came to life through 👾 augmented reality. This initiative, supported by 🇵🇹 CEiiA, Plano Nacional das Artes, and the municipalities of Matosinhos, Porto, Guimarães, and Braga, inspires sustainable behaviours and a new way of life among those who need it the most: young students. 🛹 Discover the sustainable marvel of ARKOPOLIS, a beacon of creativity and community in Eleusis, Greece. In February 2023, the 🇧🇪 Belgian collective Timecircus completed a remarkable 3,000-kilometre pilgrimage on foot, crossing the continent to reach Eleusis. This incredible journey was a symbolic gesture, offering encouragement and strength to all European citizens and marking the Opening Ceremony of the 🇬🇷 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture. Upon their arrival, Timecircus began the construction of 🪵 ARKOPOLIS with the help of local youth group Cultterra and supported by the Onassis Foundation. This cultural and recreational space, which includes the region’s only skatepark, has become a 🙋central hub of creativity and community. ARKOPOLIS is a testament to sustainable practices, featuring the wooden arch of the ARK initially crafted in Belgium and reassembled in Eleusis with minimal modifications. This dedication to sustainability underscores the project's commitment to preserving the 🌱 environment while inspiring cultural growth. Today, ARKOPOLIS is a vibrant, inclusive space open to everyone.
