  • Here are some of the figures showing the cost of climate-related events in recent decades:     Half a trillion euros over the past 40 years  Between 85 000 and 145 000 human fatalities across Europe  Over 1.7 billion urban dwellers affected     #Heatwaves are amongst the most severe consequences of climate change and are particularly alarming in cities. #Urban environments are especially vulnerable to extreme heat events and phenomena such as urban heat islands – that is, cities becoming much hotter (up to 10 degrees) than surrounding suburban and rural areas.     With record-breaking temperatures set to become ever more frequent and intense, devising impactful local measures and urban adaptation plans becomes a necessity for policymakers and local authorities.     Learn more about heat extremes in #EUcities, policy recommendations, existing tools and best practices in this policy brief: https://europa.eu/!JkFdtv

Air pollution poses a significant threat to human health and the environment.  Despite improvements, concentration levels of pollutants in European cities remain high – 96% of the urban population in the EU is exposed to levels exceeding the WHO 5 µg/m3 guideline, according to an estimate of the European Environment Agency. This results in approximately 238,000 premature deaths in the EU each year. Reducing the combustion of traditional biomass and fuelwood for residential heating could benefit air quality in urban areas. Our scientists found that burning activities in the residential sector is the primary source of pollution in 56% of the European cities they monitored. Moving away from fuelwood use for household heating either towards better insulation of a household or heat pumps and solar thermal would help increase the life standard of EU citizens. • What are the risks on the horizon?    🌍 From environmental challenges to technological revolutions, our latest report unveils ten risk clusters crucial for strategic planning.    But it's not all about the risks—discover the hidden opportunities for innovation and sustainability that await proactive policy!    However, before we can turn risks into opportunities we need to know what we're dealing with.   This is why our foresight experts identified 40 risks that decision-makers in the EU should have on their radar and potential future developments that might lead to them.    Why?  To increase early warning and preparedness, which are the keys to resilience.    Here's an example. The risk of disrupted supply chains could lead to inflation, medical supply shortages, failure of critical infrastructures and an overall decrease in well-being.   But if it leads to a more circular economy, it could also reduce reliance on imported raw materials and boost innovation in the EU.   📈 Dig deeper and find out more about how foresight can become a powerful asset in crafting a resilient future: https://lnkd.in/eeRBH-Bu    And stay tuned for 🔧 the new engagement tool we are developing alongside the study, policymakers can now assess their strategies, ensuring they are robust, resilient, and ready for what's to come. #Science4Policy Dr Stefan Muench Jacqueline Whyte Tommi Asikainen Greta H. • The transport sector is a significant contributor to Europe's energy consumption and carbon emissions, accounting for nearly a quarter of global direct CO2 emissions from fuel combustion. However, advanced biofuels offer a promising solution to reduce the carbon footprint of this critical industry. In line with the EU's #GreenDeal goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, 15 EU-funded projects are pioneering renewable fuel technologies that will drive the clean energy transition in the transport sector and bolster Europe's energy independence. These projects demonstrate how advanced biofuels and synthetic renewable fuel technologies can pave the way towards energy security and autonomy, positioning Europe at the forefront of the net-zero industrial revolution. To learn more about how these innovative projects are shaping the future of sustainable transportation, check the CORDIS Results Pack at: https://europa.eu/!Q6qMk7

Today is World Population Day!   People globally are living longer than ever, and life expectancy in the EU has been increasing in the last decades. This, combined with declining birth rates is contributing to population ageing - we’re going towards a society of longevity.   However, ageism - stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination based on age - is becoming a major challenge. Our experts analysed its impact on individuals and society on different aspects. Ageism can: ➡ Undermine solidarity across age groups, potentially leading to social conflict ➡ Lead to barriers in accessing employment for older people, causing disparities in hiring processes and promotions ➡ Affect fair access to healthcare services, especially when facilities, staff and treatment plans are not adapted to the needs of older adults ➡ Impose economic burdens on societies, affecting an efficient use of skills in the labour market. ➡ Influence policy decisions, leading to inadequate or discriminatory policies that overlook the needs of older people Swipe ➡ and read our news to find out more https://europa.eu/!xRW6gJ #WorldPopulationDay

  • Every year researchers funded by the 🇪🇺 produce a substantial number of #research results. But what happens next? For these results to benefit society, they must be made available to the relevant people and used to generate further impact. #Dissemination and #exploitation are 2 key activities to: 🔸 diffuse knowledge 🔸 increase the uptake of research and #innovation results 🔸 demonstrate the impact of the #EUfunded projects More info ➡️ europa.eu/!rnMq6x
