Design Workshop: How to create compelling visuals when it�s not usually your job

In our scroll and skim culture, visuals make or break whether a reader engages with your content. But we don�t all have a graphic design professional on staff to help create compelling images on deadline. If you�re a journalist or communication professional looking to build your design skills, get a head start with our beginner course for designing visuals when it�s not usually part of your job.

Data Journalism Bootcamp - Google Sheets + Python (In-Person)

IRE�s Data Journalism Bootcamp provides a broad foundation in finding, assessing and analyzing data for anyone interested in using these skills in the newsroom. This version of the bootcamp is tailored for people who already have some experience working with data. We'll start with an accelerated overview of using spreadsheets to clean and analyze data, and then introduce Python, a powerful general-purpose programming language that you can use to analyze huge datasets, scrape data from the web, clean and reshape data, extract complex tables from PDF files and much more. We�ll also cover finding data sources, using public records, bulletproofing your analysis and best practices for using numbers in your stories. Attendees are asked to bring their own laptop and pre-install some software prior to the bootcamp. If a laptop is not available, we would be happy to provide one for you. Please reach out to logistics@ire.org to make arrangements.

IRE requires all attendees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and participants are expected to follow all COVID protocols in place at the host institution. Masks are encouraged.
