The hardware knowledge base is being built to list consumer or pro-sumer broadband network gear. Before taking the trouble to suggest a missing entry please read this.

First, before submitting any entry, always check to make sure your entry isn't already in the database. If the entry is in the database under a different model name or number, IM one of the hardware editors on the "meet the editors" page and they'll add the second name to the existing entry or fix the problem.

We ARE currently accepting new entries for:
  • Cable Modems
  • DSL Modems
  • Routers
  • Access Points and Extenders (not USB)
  • Multi-function devices
  • VOIP hardware
  • ONTs.
We are NOT currently accepting entries for:
  • Enterprise gear
  • Dedicated 4 6 or 8 port switches
  • Ethernet adapters
  • USB devices
  • Entire PCs, or PCs-on-a-board
  • Network attached storage boxes
  • "internet of things" devices
There is however a SOFTWARE category for router and firewalls "in a box" such as pfSense that could substitute for hardware when run on "some old PC", or for open source software that can be flashed to existing gadgets such as dd-wrt. But no for commercial software utilities.

If you see an entry that has issues, should not be there, and so on, please IM a hardware editor or flag it (if there is a flag function visible on the page).

Feedback received on this FAQ entry:
  • What about a hardware based firewall device (namely, the Firewalla Gold, received this summer via an Indiegogo campaign)? I'd be happy to provide all the stats I'm aware of. It might seem to fall under tghe "multi-function device" as well, as it can do Routing, VPN, DDNS, etc..

  • Media converters qualify? I guess they should all be line speed and no surprises, but when getting to symmetric gigabit and 10GbE connections they are the only type of CPE provided by some ISPs.

  • It would be helpful to have a field for software like Unifi which manages all Unifi APs, routers and switches. All management features are provided by Unifi and are the same for like devices.
