4. Accounts
Since February 2002, all new user accounts at BroadBandReports.com are created as either basic or premium.
Created by buying 10 or more tool points ($10) at the time of the account creation. The 10 tool points used will be credited to the user's account. (There is a 24 hour window after joining to do this.) (Upgrading Existing Accounts) Accounts created prior to February 2002 gained the premium account features over time. They are not true premium accounts, however. Members prior to February 2002 can also upgrade their accounts to premium in order to support the site, but the 10 tool points WILL NOT BE credited to the user's account. How do I upgrade? Once you are logged in you may go to "Members" selection on the left hand menu option on the home page. Click on "Upgrade" If you have not purchased ten tool points for upgrade, then you must do this before you will be able to upgrade your membership. You may access our secure storefront from this page to purchase tool points and then return to this page to upgrade. If you have already purchased ten tool points or more, you may proceed to the bottom of the page. Click on the link that says "upgrade your account now." You can upgrade your membership from here. Your tool point account will be debited 10 tool points.
These are the finer points of Premium membership:
•Upload posting avatar -- animated, too •Maintain a library of avatars for your use •Use tool points to queue jump site tools •Priority security port scan •No limit on user-to-user instant message length •Access to social forums •Unlimited posting •Premium accounts will not lose site features •Other extra forum features •Show your support for DSLR
Upgrading from basic or original account to premium account will eventually be priced higher than a premium account upon activation. Note: It is NOT permissible for users to create a second account on the site. Doing so jeopardizes your membership here and any accumulated tool points, etc. edited by KeysCapt Q: Where do I go from here? A: It's up to you at this point! Once your user name and password are entered, select a quick link button on the sign-in page for authenticated and fast access to the respective area.
by KeysCapt You can now donate Premium Status to another user. Site users now have the ability to give others a gift of premium. This is done from the tool points page in the main site menu. The member receiving the tool points must have been a site member for 30 days. This can be anonymous (there is a checkbox for this) or not, as you prefer. You can give animated avatar status or premium status. If you donate premium status to someone, you have to enter 10.0 tool points as before. An IM will go to the recipient, but will or will not mention your name, whichever you prefer. ![]() by KeysCapt This generally occurs if you change your e-mail address in your profile and do not re-verify your account, or your account has not been verified properly for some reason. Follow these steps: 1. Logout of the site. ![]() Check your e-mail inbox to see if a message is waiting for you. It will be from: and will have the subject line: The body of the message will contain the following text: where XXXXXX/XXXX is a verification id. Click the link (if blue and underlined) or copy and past the entire URL into your browser's address window and hit enter. This will take you directly to DSLR/BBR, and a message will appear stating that your account has been properly verified. Now you can logon to the site, and you will no longer be temporary. 2. If the verification e-mail did not arrive, or you deleted it by mistake, then you may have a problem. But don't despair, there are a couple workarounds you can try. First, go back to DSLR/BBR, login and click the Preferences link to go to your page. ![]() Check to make sure your e-mail address is typed in correctly (and, of course, that it is a valid e-mail address). If your e-mail address was typed incorrectly say DOH!, then go to step 3. If your e-mail address is correct, then go to step 4. 3. If your e-mail address was typed incorrectly, or it was an invalid e-mail address, then simply type in the correct address and click:
4. Logout of the site ![]() and return to the DSLR/BBR home page. Click the Login button. ![]() ![]() In the next window, enter your user name, but click the I Forgot my Password button. This should dispatch an e-mail to your inbox. The e-mail should be from passwords@broadbandreports.com and have the subject line and will contain your password. But, if the site detects your account is temporary, the e-mail should also contain the verification link described in step 1. If so, follow the instructions for step 1, and you should be all set. If the email does not contain a verification link, then go to step 5. 5. If all else fails, go to your Preferences page ![]() ...and type in a different e-mail address, if you have one. If you don't, type a bogus e-mail address such as bogus@bogus -- but DO NOT type someone else's e-mail address! Click:
As in step 3 a page appears, click:
Now re-key your correct, valid, e-mail address in your Preferences page and click the Update Profile button again, then click the OK button. Both times you should see a message stating that a re-verification link has been sent to your e-mail address. Of course, only the last one will show up. Now go to step 1, and you should be all set. If none of these solutions works for you, then your ISP's mail server might be experiencing problems receiving mail. Contact your ISP to check on mail server status. Be patient and your re-verification e-mail will show up. -- From an original entry by Coriolis modified with graphics and updated. by KeysCapt For complete information about tool points, see the Tool Point FAQ by KeysCapt I was trying to make changes to my posting sig, and now there is no "Update Profile" button -- I can't submit my changes! If this happens, it is almost always because you left an " off the end of your HTML code. You will have to contact a moderator, and they will forward the problem to a site superuser who will "nuke" your preferences. Then you will have to start from scratch again. Oops! by KeysCapt In the login box, there is a forgot password link Please use it instead of emailing us! If you have also lost touch with your old email address, and hence cannot recover access, please use this form: and someone will attend to it within a day or so. Feedback received on this FAQ entry:
Accounts do not expire, but if the user does not log in over a year's time, the account name may be assumed by another member. by hacheelle In order to fix your account, we need to verify your email address. We do this by emailing you a temporary password. Until you log in with this temporary password, your account is flagged as un-fixed. This can limit your ability to do a few things on the site, such as uploading an avatar and changing your email address, for example. Please use the Forgot password feature to get an email containing the full status of your account, including a temporary password if your account is still unverified. edited by KeysCapt The procedure for taking a username/login name that has been in use by someone else is as follows: If the account has seen at least 365 days with no activity, you may assume the username. To do this, visit /join and enter the desired name in the field provided at the top of the page. This will cause the inactive account to be placed in a kind of limbo, and the original user can still come back, although the user name will be slightly changed. Your account will have successfully assumed the username. by hacheelle We tend to accept the vast majority of user names on this site, but that acceptance has its limits. If your choice is one which is offensive to the average, reasonable user, it will be reviewed, and you may be asked to change it. If you fail to do so, your account may be restricted until you comply. Before you ask, our ability to do this is contained in the »Site FAQ »Terms of Use for DSLR "We reserve the right to edit or remove any postings, or user accounts, for any reason whatsoever." If you're logged in, you can change your user name on the Preferences page. User names can be no greater than 12 characters. The page can also be reached from the "Members" link at the top of the Favorite Forums and All Forums pages. Your points and other details will be preserved. Caution: If you make three name changes within a 30-day period, you WILL NOT be able to make another change for an additional 30 days. edited by KeysCapt Changing your email address isn't a big deal. But once you've done so, you must re-verify your new email address. To change your email, start at the Members link in the left column. A verification email should be generated by the system automatically using your new email address, and you simply respond to it. If this does not happen, you can self-generate a verification email here: /forgot by KeysCapt It is a perk for frequent users of the site. You must be premium or have at least one star for this option. In one of the Entertainment forums, you will notice the underlined links seen below, at the top of the forum. ![]() To add yours, click on photo album and follow the instructions. Do the same thing for your pet by clicking on pets. To change yours, go to the photo album where you posted the graphic. Click on your ID in the link at the top of the page. You may then delete or edit your pictures. To see which album a particular picture is from, you can "hover" your mouse over it, and it will show you the link. by Flagger Go to this page. ![]() Enter your new zip code. It will normally appear by the next day after 8:00 AM Eastern Time. It's also possible to enter up to 12 characters instead of a zip code, but if it doesn't meet site standards, it may be vaporized! by KeysCapt If you are determined to leave us, visit your account profile screen here. You must be logged in to do this. Click the "Remove me!" button at the bottom of the box. If you cannot remember your password, then please use the "forgot password" function on the login screen. Deactivation of your account will change the password and remove personal information, but will leave any reviews or forum contributions you have already made. It is strongly suggested that you change your username prior to clicking "Remove me" if you are trying to disassociate yourself with your history here. PLEASE NOTE: If you have purchased tool points, these will NOT be refunded to you when you deactivate your account. edited by tmpchaos See this for discussion about your privacy on this site. by KeysCapt Just instituted, (Dec 2002), this feature pops up the following window: ![]() This is a change to keep the login cookie from expiring and causing you to be unexpectedly logged out. The number of simultaneous logins allowed may also be increased using this feature. If you confirm your password every week (or at longer intervals if you don't use the site regularly), you will stay logged in. If you fail to come up with the password, you are logged out immediately. To explain the confusion regarding the weekly prompt versus the 60 day cookie issue: Your login name is remembered for the next 60 days, but for security purposes, you must verify your password every 7 days. The reasons are two-fold: it minimizes the risk of accidentally leaving yourself logged in to a public computer, and there seems to be a number of site users who routinely forget their passwords, so this helps them to remember it. by KeysCapt If you use the site daily, your visits will increase by roughly one per day. Visiting multiple times in a day does NOT count as multiple visits. You can [sometimes] be credited with two visits in a given day within twelve hour segments -- roughly 10AM to 10PM and 10PM to 10AM Eastern Time. From a post by mjf [edited for continuity]: You do not have to log in and log out to record a visit. If you have the login saved in the cookie, your visit will be recorded. edited by KeysCapt The Buddy List, which you can reach from the icon pictured below, is a way for you to see when other users are online. Your buddies appear in GREEN if they have been online in the past 10 minutes (on your buddies page) or 5 minutes in the buddy status line (at the top). ![]() To ADD someone to your buddy list, click on their user name in any post they have made. Alternatively, you can click on About (in the site navigation bar on any page) and Who, then enter their name in the box that says "Find." When you are on their page, you will see: ![]() Click on the start button next to "Watch List," and that user will be added to your buddy list, but ... IF they also add YOU to their buddy list, they will now show up as a Buddy in your list, your "mutual buddy list." [Not an official site term ... used for clarity.] If they DON'T add you, that user will appear as a Watched (stalked) user. The difference is that only Buddies (those who have also selected YOU as a buddy) will show up at the top of your screen when they are online ("mutual buddies"). To remove a buddy, simply repeat the process, and there will be a STOP button to remove someone. ![]() Note: There is a limit of 100 users in your buddy list. When you open your Buddy List, you will see a display of everyone you have selected, either mutual buddy or watched, at the very top. Next to these, you will see a colored button:
Below this, you will see another area with two tabs: Updated new topics started by buddies and Updated new topics started by watched. |
