4. Accounts

Since February 2002, all new user accounts at BroadBandReports.com are created as either basic or premium.

Premium Accounts
(New Accounts)
Created by buying 10 or more tool points ($10) at the time of the account creation. The 10 tool points used will be credited to the user's account. (There is a 24 hour window after joining to do this.)

(Upgrading Existing Accounts)
Accounts created prior to February 2002 gained the premium account features over time. They are not true premium accounts, however. Members prior to February 2002 can also upgrade their accounts to premium in order to support the site, but the 10 tool points WILL NOT BE credited to the user's account.

How do I upgrade?

Once you are logged in you may go to "Members" selection on the left hand menu option on the home page.
Click on "Upgrade"

If you have not purchased ten tool points for upgrade, then you must do this before you will be able to upgrade your membership. You may access our secure storefront from this page to purchase tool points and then return to this page to upgrade.

If you have already purchased ten tool points or more, you may proceed to the bottom of the page. Click on the link that says "upgrade your account now." You can upgrade your membership from here. Your tool point account will be debited 10 tool points.

Please Note: It takes a while, sometimes overnight, for the "Premium" tag to show up under your name in your posts.

Premium Accounts
... will never lose existing site facilities or features.

These are the finer points of Premium membership:
    •No banner advertising
•Upload posting avatar -- animated, too
•Maintain a library of avatars for your use
•Use tool points to queue jump site tools
    •Priority security port scan
•No limit on user-to-user instant message length
    •Access to social forums
    •Unlimited posting
•Premium accounts will not lose site features
    •Other extra forum features
    •Show your support for DSLR

Basic Accounts
... created on or after February 2002 have significantly less functionality than premium accounts on the site -- users of basic accounts will hit limits more frequently.
Upgrading from basic or original account to premium account will eventually be priced higher than a premium account upon activation.

Note: It is NOT permissible for users to create a second account on the site. Doing so jeopardizes your membership here and any accumulated tool points, etc.

Q: Where do I go from here?
A: It's up to you at this point! Once your user name and password are entered, select a quick link button on the sign-in page for authenticated and fast access to the respective area.

Favorite Forums
To select several favorites, go to the »/forums/all page. Click on the "pick favs" link (#1), and the page will change to show the "Remember Fav. Forums" button (#2), along with checkboxes beside each forum (#3). Select yours, then hit the button.

Updated Followed
Any followed topic can also be marked. Marking them means they join a collection of topics you have previously marked, and you can pull them up at any time and page back through them. They are, in a sense, bookmarks stored by the site for your login ID.

Instant Msgs
One of the more useful features on the site is the "IM" or Instant Message, also referred to as "PM" or Private Messages.

Home Page
An excellent area for current news, hot topics, articles by the members and staff and ISP ratings. Certainly worth a look!

Forgot password
If you no longer have access to your old email address, and you forgot your password and are logged out, what can you do? Well, if your old account has a lot of history or tool points, we can usually recover it: use the contacts page to request this or post in the Site Help forum.

Common login difficulties
  • Your browser is refusing our cookie, or your software firewall is blocking all cookies.
  • Misreading/mistyping your password.
  • Getting your user name wrong (it is CaSe SeNSiTive).
  • Your computer date (year) is wrong.
  • Your "C" drive is full.

Join the biggest broadband support community on the web but start out the right way .. get a Premium account!

    Our Guarantee
Our login cookie is only used to save you from having to retype your user name and password repeatedly. We do not reveal any details you provide to any third party, and your email address is not sold or used for our own marketing without your prior permission. If we ever close, or change ownership, you will be provided fair opportunity to erase your account (but not any contributions you have made). You can now donate Premium Status to another user. Site users now have the ability to give others a gift of premium. This is done from the tool points page in the main site menu.

The member receiving the tool points must have been a site member for 30 days.

This can be anonymous (there is a checkbox for this) or not, as you prefer. You can give animated avatar status or premium status. If you donate premium status to someone, you have to enter 10.0 tool points as before. An IM will go to the recipient, but will or will not mention your name, whichever you prefer.

This generally occurs if you change your e-mail address in your profile and do not re-verify your account, or your account has not been verified properly for some reason.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Logout of the site.

Check your e-mail inbox to see if a message is waiting for you. It will be from:

    passwords@broadbandreports.com

and will have the subject line:

    broadbandreports account email re-verification

The body of the message will contain the following text:

Your verification URL is : /verify/XXXXXX/XXXX

where XXXXXX/XXXX is a verification id. Click the link (if blue and underlined) or copy and past the entire URL into your browser's address window and hit enter. This will take you directly to DSLR/BBR, and a message will appear stating that your account has been properly verified. Now you can logon to the site, and you will no longer be temporary.

    2. If the verification e-mail did not arrive, or you deleted it by mistake, then you may have a problem. But don't despair, there are a couple workarounds you can try.

First, go back to DSLR/BBR, login and click the Preferences link to go to your page.

Check to make sure your e-mail address is typed in correctly (and, of course, that it is a valid e-mail address). If your e-mail address was typed incorrectly say DOH!, then go to step 3.

If your e-mail address is correct, then go to step 4.

    3. If your e-mail address was typed incorrectly, or it was an invalid e-mail address, then simply type in the correct address and click:
    Update Profile
A page will appear stating your profile has been updated, and if the site detects a different e-mail address, a statement will also appear indicating that an e-mail will be sent to the new e-mail address containing a re-verification link. Click:
    OK
and go check your e-mail inbox (it may take a while depending on server load, internet traffic, etc). Follow step 1 and you should be all set.
    4. Logout of the site

and return to the DSLR/BBR home page. Click the Login button.

In the next window, enter your user name, but click the I Forgot my Password button.

This should dispatch an e-mail to your inbox. The e-mail should be from passwords@broadbandreports.com and have the subject line

    BroadBandReports password reminder

and will contain your password. But, if the site detects your account is temporary, the e-mail should also contain the verification link described in step 1. If so, follow the instructions for step 1, and you should be all set. If the email does not contain a verification link, then go to step 5.

    5. If all else fails, go to your Preferences page

...and type in a different e-mail address, if you have one. If you don't, type a bogus e-mail address such as bogus@bogus -- but DO NOT type someone else's e-mail address!

    Click:
    Update Profile

As in step 3 a page appears, click:
    OK

Now re-key your correct, valid, e-mail address in your Preferences page and click the Update Profile button again, then click the OK button. Both times you should see a message stating that a re-verification link has been sent to your e-mail address. Of course, only the last one will show up. Now go to step 1, and you should be all set.

If none of these solutions works for you, then your ISP's mail server might be experiencing problems receiving mail. Contact your ISP to check on mail server status. Be patient and your re-verification e-mail will show up.

I was trying to make changes to my posting sig, and now there is no "Update Profile" button -- I can't submit my changes!

If this happens, it is almost always because you left an " off the end of your HTML code. You will have to contact a moderator, and they will forward the problem to a site superuser who will "nuke" your preferences. Then you will have to start from scratch again.

When i choose the link "I don't have access to this email, but I remember the account", I am told I can log into the temporary activated account provided I have the stale password. Accounts do not expire, but if the user does not log in over a year's time, the account name may be assumed by another member.

In order to fix your account, we need to verify your email address. We do this by emailing you a temporary password. Until you log in with this temporary password, your account is flagged as un-fixed.

This can limit your ability to do a few things on the site, such as uploading an avatar and changing your email address, for example.

Please use the Forgot password feature to get an email containing the full status of your account, including a temporary password if your account is still unverified.

The procedure for taking a username/login name that has been in use by someone else is as follows:

If the account has seen at least 365 days with no activity, you may assume the username. To do this, visit /join and enter the desired name in the field provided at the top of the page. This will cause the inactive account to be placed in a kind of limbo, and the original user can still come back, although the user name will be slightly changed.
Your account will have successfully assumed the username.

We tend to accept the vast majority of user names on this site, but that acceptance has its limits. If your choice is one which is offensive to the average, reasonable user, it will be reviewed, and you may be asked to change it. If you fail to do so, your account may be restricted until you comply.

Before you ask, our ability to do this is contained in the »Site FAQ »Terms of Use for DSLR "We reserve the right to edit or remove any postings, or user accounts, for any reason whatsoever."

If you're logged in, you can change your user name on the Preferences page. User names can be no greater than 12 characters.

The page can also be reached from the "Members" link at the top of the Favorite Forums and All Forums pages.

Your points and other details will be preserved.

Caution: If you make three name changes within a 30-day period, you WILL NOT be able to make another change for an additional 30 days.

Changing your email address isn't a big deal. But once you've done so, you must re-verify your new email address.

To change your email, start at the Members link in the left column.

A verification email should be generated by the system automatically using your new email address, and you simply respond to it. If this does not happen, you can self-generate a verification email here: /forgot

It is a perk for frequent users of the site. You must be premium or have at least one star for this option.

In one of the Entertainment forums, you will notice the underlined links seen below, at the top of the forum.

To add yours, click on photo album and follow the instructions. Do the same thing for your pet by clicking on pets.

To change yours, go to the photo album where you posted the graphic. Click on your ID in the link at the top of the page. You may then delete or edit your pictures. To see which album a particular picture is from, you can "hover" your mouse over it, and it will show you the link.

    Go to this page.

Enter your new zip code. It will normally appear by the next day after 8:00 AM Eastern Time.

It's also possible to enter up to 12 characters instead of a zip code, but if it doesn't meet site standards, it may be vaporized!

If you are determined to leave us, visit your account profile screen here. You must be logged in to do this. Click the "Remove me!" button at the bottom of the box.

If you cannot remember your password, then please use the "forgot password" function on the login screen.

Deactivation of your account will change the password and remove personal information, but will leave any reviews or forum contributions you have already made.  It is strongly suggested that you change your username prior to clicking "Remove me" if you are trying to disassociate yourself with your history here.

PLEASE NOTE: If you have purchased tool points, these will NOT be refunded to you when you deactivate your account.

Just instituted, (Dec 2002), this feature pops up the following window:

This is a change to keep the login cookie from expiring and causing you to be unexpectedly logged out. The number of simultaneous logins allowed may also be increased using this feature.

If you confirm your password every week (or at longer intervals if you don't use the site regularly), you will stay logged in. If you fail to come up with the password, you are logged out immediately.

To explain the confusion regarding the weekly prompt versus the 60 day cookie issue:
Your login name is remembered for the next 60 days, but for security purposes, you must verify your password every 7 days. The reasons are two-fold: it minimizes the risk of accidentally leaving yourself logged in to a public computer, and there seems to be a number of site users who routinely forget their passwords, so this helps them to remember it.
Thanks to Pike for this info in a post.

If you use the site daily, your visits will increase by roughly one per day. Visiting multiple times in a day does NOT count as multiple visits.

You can [sometimes] be credited with two visits in a given day within twelve hour segments -- roughly 10AM to 10PM and 10PM to 10AM Eastern Time.

From a post by mjf [edited for continuity]:
You do not have to log in and log out to record a visit. If you have the login saved in the cookie, your visit will be recorded.

It is possible to visit and not have your visit recorded if you only stay for a short time or if you do not register active page turning. To check, go to your profile page ("my page" in the main menu, or just click on your user name) before you leave the site and check to see if "Last Visit" has been updated. If it doesn't show the current date and approximate time, your visit was not recorded.

Feedback received on this FAQ entry:
    • For clarity purposes, twelve hours since your last *recorded* visit appears to be the minimum for a new visit to be counted. The 'sometimes' is here because unless you somehow manage to always visit within exactly 12 hours, you will eventually be back to single daily visits. Either visit your user profile from an active browser session (this will refresh the last visit if working as intended) or visit it from a private tab, window or anonymous session to check your last recorded visit.

    • How are visits counted? I usually am logged in all the time and visit the site multiple times in a day. It is a go to site for me. Depending on MS Security Updates my Uptime can be a few days and up to and over a month. The problem with W7 and not using Linux. I use Winbar progam to monitor CPU usage, Memory, Battery, Speaker Volume and more. My current uptime is 4days, 18:26.. I use Firefox and usually the most current version. I do have a number of security addons/extensions - ghostery, betterprivacy, donottrackme, adblock, noscript and more. Plus others to increase efficiency or provide tools to better use FF to do whatever. For fun I have been tracking my logins/uptime against my visit count. I have found my days visit and visitcount to be off. My visit count as recorded by your system is less than the days I have been on site. Of course maybe it is one of my addons/extensions messing with your cookie or whatever mechanism used to track my daily visit count? It is not a big deal, but it is something I have been curious for a while and just now found the time to ask the question. It is not a big whoop, just curious. Just checked your user name, cannot tell last time you logged on or posted. Just going to send anyway. I have been using the site since 1999 or 2000? It was my personal resource when doing tech support for USwest/Qwest for a couple of years. Good times, no scripts, could go anywhere on the internet [except pron], no blocked sites, fat pipe, decent knowledge base, well staffed, 4-10hr shifts, started at 4am when calls came in every 5 to 15 minutes, good times. And wages and benefits were decent then. When 1st there we only had dialup/isdn in Phoenix, when I left we had dialup/isdn in all 13 states and DSL in all major cities and minor ones, had pop presence for dialup in all major cities through us. I am sure I was a member before 2005, but for a couple of years between 2000 and 2005 I was involved in other ventures and was not logging in for over a year or more.

The Buddy List, which you can reach from the icon pictured below, is a way for you to see when other users are online. Your buddies appear in GREEN if they have been online in the past 10 minutes (on your buddies page) or 5 minutes in the buddy status line (at the top).

To ADD someone to your buddy list, click on their user name in any post they have made. Alternatively, you can click on About (in the site navigation bar on any page) and Who, then enter their name in the box that says "Find." When you are on their page, you will see:

Click on the start button next to "Watch List," and that user will be added to your buddy list, but ...

IF they also add YOU to their buddy list, they will now show up as a Buddy in your list, your "mutual buddy list." [Not an official site term ... used for clarity.]

If they DON'T add you, that user will appear as a Watched (stalked) user. The difference is that only Buddies (those who have also selected YOU as a buddy) will show up at the top of your screen when they are online ("mutual buddies").

To remove a buddy, simply repeat the process, and there will be a STOP button to remove someone.

Note: There is a limit of 100 users in your buddy list.

When you open your Buddy List, you will see a display of everyone you have selected, either mutual buddy or watched, at the very top. Next to these, you will see a colored button:
Green signifies On Line in the past 3 to 15 minutes
Yellow/Orange signifies Off Line for somewhere between 15 minutes to 8 hours
Red signifies Off Line for more than 8 hours

The color indicators are square now, and vary in hue to signify additional time periods within those specified above, too much to document here.

b indicates that the user is a "mutual buddy."

Clicking on any of these users' names will take you to their page.

Below this, you will see another area with two tabs: Updated new topics started by buddies and Updated new topics started by watched.
