The document presents a methodology for developing UML models from a user interface prototype. The methodology involves identifying user interface elements from the prototype, developing a flow diagram of the elements, creating an activity model, and developing a use case model. The methodology is demonstrated through a case study of developing UML models for the login page of the Amazon.com website. Key steps include identifying UI elements like workspaces and functions, creating a flow diagram to show the main and exception flows, developing an activity model of the login process, and specifying a use case for login and authentication.

Dynamic Open Semantic Service Networks
Dynamic Open Semantic Service NetworksDynamic Open Semantic Service Networks
Dynamic Open Semantic Service Networks

To address the emerging importance of services and the relevance of relationships, we have developed and introduced the concept of Open Semantic Service Network (OSSN). OSSN are networks which relate services with the assumption that firms make the information of their services openly available using suitable models. Services, relationships and networks are said to be open (similar to LOD), when their models are transparently available and accessible by external entities and follow an open world assumption. Networks are said to be semantic when they explicitly describe their capabilities and usage, typically using a conceptual or domain model, and ideally using Semantic Web standards and techniques. One limitation of OSSNs is that they were conceived without accounting for the dynamic behavior of service networks. In other words, they can only capture static snapshots of service-based economies but do not include any mechanism to model reactions and effects that services have on other services and the notion of time

The document discusses improving intelligibility and control in ubiquitous computing environments. It provides examples where systems trained inhabitants instead of the other way around, causing reluctance to correct systems and "fights" over control. The authors propose making invisible computers more visible by answering "why" and "why not" questions from users through graphical behavior notation, cancel commands, and ambient projection systems to provide real-time feedback and increase intelligibility and user control.

How to Survive Multi-Device User Interface Design with UIML

Talk given at the DSP Valley seminar "Exploring GUI design for embedded systems" together with Jan Meskens on June 9, 2009. See also: http://www.dspvalley.com/upload/event/site/5270/index.html Abstract: The User Interface Markup Language has been around for 10 years now and it is still evolving. The language did not reach a large audience yet and there are few publicly known cases where the language is used. Nevertheless, UIML is probably one of the most generic and flexible user interface markup languages available, mainly because it is in fact a meta-language that is not limited to a particular domain, device, platform or widget set. The design of the language makes it an ideal candidate to support future evolutions in user interface techniques and guarantees the survival of user interface designs over time. At the dawn of the 4.0 version of the UIML specification—which will be released soon—this talk provides an overview of the language, the novelties of the 4.0 specification and some tools that we have built and are available today. We also provide an overview of our work to integrate UIML in a multi-device user interface design process that allows designers to create user interfaces for multiple devices without having to deal with an abstract user interface specification. Finally, we will highlight our experiences with designing tailored user interfaces for embedded platforms with UIML, and discuss the pros and cons of using a high-level user interface description language on devices with limited resources.

Tangible Mashups: Exploiting Links between the Physical and Virtual World

The link between corresponding physical and virtual worlds has been the subject of research for many years now. The instantiation of this link was often a complex task that involved special purpose techniques to identify and search for the virtual information that belongs to a selected physical object. It is since the conception of physical tagging technologies such as RFID that physical objects can carry their own virtual information. In this paper we show a simple yet effective approach to extract the virtual information of physical objects and aggregate it in a sensible way for the user. We rely on Web 2.0 techniques to accomplish this. A useful side-effect of our approach is the fact that a set or mashup of physical objects leads to a mashup of their related information in the virtual world. Presented at the first International Workshop on System Support for the Internet of Things (WoSSIoT '07), Lisbon, Portugal, March 20, 2007.

Semantic Web Technologies for HCI

Semantic web technologies pop up frequently in current computer science research, in particular in fields related to HCI. Although the semantic web itself has not yet been fully realized, the supporting technologies are mature enough to be used for other applications. The semantic web initiative centers around knowledge representation and automated reasoning about knowledge. This concept is general enough to find its use in many different fields (ambient intelligence, service oriented computing, etc.). I will give an overview of the basic concepts of the semantic web. Important semantic web standards such as RDF, RDFS and OWL will be covered as well. Presented during a HCI chit-chat session at our institute on September 8th, 2006.

Bringing together the physical and digital worlds has been the subject of research for some time now. In particular, a number of successful prototypes that link physical objects with digital information (often called smart object systems) have already been presented. However, a generally accepted architecture to design such systems has not yet emerged. This paper presents a reusable and practical framework for developing smart object applications today. At the basis of our approach lies the use of Semantic Web technology to drive interaction between the physical and digital worlds. We used this framework to develop SemaNews, a novel application that combines the advantages of digital news feeds with those of physical newspapers. To verify the reusability of our architecture, we built a second prototype in a different application domain: STalkingObjects provides the basic components of a store of the future.

Staffan Canback - The 18 Rays of Project Management

A while back I created this training material for project managers in 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. I am now sharing it widely since it is useful to a broader audience. A central theme is that project management is much more than putting together presentations. It covers all kinds of high-level cognitive efforts, which is why it is exciting (at first). It is also important to note that you do not improvise your way into project management. It is a well-developed craft that is far down its experience curve. I started my career at McKinsey & Company in 1984 and was an Engagement Manager between 1986 and 1989. I then became a partner. So my project management days are long gone, but I have interacted with and trained countless young consultants since. The document is not a manual. If you follow it 100% you would not have time to do your project management job. But I trust there is always an idea or two that is useful on any project. To me, the most difficult part of this document was to create the 18 rays with the grey contours. It involves some trigonometry. Getting this right was fun.

Game Product Manager VS Product Manager.pdf
Game Product Manager VS Product Manager.pdfGame Product Manager VS Product Manager.pdf
Game Product Manager VS Product Manager.pdf

Hi guys! To do the first things first, I have to introduce myself and my background, and we need an explanation for the reason and incentive behind this summary presentation and the series of articles that may follow for more details. I am a game designer with a focus on economy design. After some years of working in game design, I felt the most inspiring thing for me is seeing an increase in a graph (of course, not the churn graph). The combination of this with a focus on features and their results and the needs of the game led me toward becoming a product manager. At first, I started reading about product managers' roles, responsibilities, daily routines, and most importantly, the methods they use for fulfilling their responsibilities. Initially, I tried to implement these methods in our structure, but the deeper I delved into gaming product management, the more methods I found that needed to change to achieve the best results. After some time, I realized that having knowledge of how product managers in application products operate is necessary but not sufficient to call oneself a game product manager. Of course, they invented the wheel, special thanks to them, but the fact is that we do not have a car; we have bicycles or airplanes! So, the same wheel does not work for us! In this series of articles, I want to describe how things are different when playing the role of a PM or GPM, what you need to know, and what are not our primary challenges.
