Introduction of Code Signing
A Code Signing Certificate is a digital signature technology allows authorized
software publishers to sign their software code, script and content to authenticate
their identification over internet.
It ensures customers about the security of software code, script and content using a
digital signature for 32-bit or 64-bit on the internet.
A software developers published signs on their software using a Code Signing
Certificate that indicates users the software is genuine and verified by the trusted
certificate authority and the code of software is not tempered since its signed.
How does Code Signing Works?
Generally, A Code Signing Certificate works on “Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)”
including a public key and a private key.
A Private Key is used to sign the data and the use of public key is to confirm the sign
of the data. With the sign of software code, you can timestamp your code to avoid
annoying expiry of the digital certificate.
Users can trust on signed software and they can download it easily, also increases
reliability among software users.
A Code Signing Software is useful to sing the content like software objects,
configuration file, manual, virus updates, device drivers, etc.
The Process of Code Signing
The developers and software publishers will request a Code Signing Certificate from
the Trusted CA.
They use a Code Signing program based on platform, to add a digital sign to its
program code in merge with the Code Signing Certificate.
The program/software will be uploaded to their website or mobile network that are
completely available for download or run over website.
If users want to run or download that program, the digital signature will be
checked.
The Web browser will resolve if it will display a warning message with an execution
block (it depends on the platform, application and security settings of the user).
The Benefits of Code Signing Certificate
• Build a strong relationship with your clients
• Secure your customers against modified or corrupt codes
• Reduce security warnings and errors
