Sam Searle, Data Management Coordinator for Monash University Library, was my highly organised host (pictured). She not only arranged a sell-out seminar for me at Monash, but also a lift to Clayton campus with Peter Mathews (Monash University Library Planning Executive) and another back with Gaby Bright (eResearch Communication, VERSI) in time for a full afternoon of meetings at the University of Melbourne. (Considering that train tracks were buckling from the heat, I was very grateful for the escorts!)

- “ I need to analyse some data for a project, but all I can find are published papers with tables and graphs, not the original data source.” Accessing … “ I’ve found the data I need, but I’m not sure how to gain access to it.” Using … “ I’ve got the data I need, but I’m having problems analysing it in my chosen software.” Teaching … “ I need a dataset that shows the distribution of mobile phone use to engage my students.”
- The pressure brought to bear on researchers to improve their data management and data sharing practice has come from research funders seeking to add value to expensive research and solve cross-disciplinary grand challenges; publishers seeking to be responsive to calls for transparency and reproducability of the scientific record; and the public seeking to gain and re-use knowledge for their own purposes using new online tools. Higher education institutions have been rather reluctant to assert their role in either incentivising or supporting their academic staff in meeting these more demanding requirements for research practice
