My Lady Jane: Season 1 Reviews

The series truly shines in its audacious script, tossing historical accuracy aside for modern slang, riotous anachronisms, and a cheeky narrator breaking the fourth wall.

Fun take on historical drama. Leads have great chemistry

My Lady Jane is blessedly, defiantly bonkers, and I am so glad it’s here. Stuff realism in fantasy; give me boldness and fun!

The romantic bits are hawt, and the political bits are haughty. Family dynamics are ri-donk-ulously complicated, and the Ethians really know how to get up in the Veritys’s business. There’s murder and mayhem and mobs. Oh my.

My Lady Jane is entertaining and witty and the protagonists are really fun to follow. The best part about the series is Kate O’Flynn’s Princess Mary, who is delightfully unhinged in every scene.

... An enjoyable bit of counterfactual Tudor rumpy entitled My Lady Jane.

Beheadings, bawdy humour, romance and court intrigue pepper this smart, alternate history look at the tragic story of the Lady Jane Grey

My Lady Jane is an absolute joy, best binged, that will leave you clamouring for more.

Bader and Bluemel have absolutely smoking chemistry and My Lady Jane takes full advantage of the annoyed smoldering that both actors excel at. But best of all, beyond being an alternate take on Tudor history, this story is an unapologetic romance.

It’s girl power with an “up yours” exuberance. The narrative blithely moves from one scrape to the next, with a backbone of veteran British actors in the supporting ranks.

My Lady Jane doesn’t bring much that’s new to the increasingly crowded field of cheekily anachronistic period pieces like Bridgerton, Dickinson, and The Great. But it executes on the premise very well.

A lot of kooky fun.

The narration makes the show feel like a curse-filled, irreverent rethinking of a story that’s 500 years old, with the naughtiness of the attraction between Jane and Guildford layered on to make it even more modern.

It remains a decidedly odd concept, to take a little known historical event, mess it up and add magic animals. But it works by throwing its whole heart into the endeavour.

A rip-roaring and hilarious adventure full of magic, romance and bold female characters who take control of their legacies.

It’s a tight and fun series with plenty of world building, recurring jokes and cliffhangers to invest younger audiences, with the bonus of steamy sex scenes, choreographed fights and period costumes.

[My Lady Jane] is a deeply unserious show, and you should calibrate your expectations accordingly before walking into it.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 27, 2024

My Lady Jane feels like a spiritual sibling of shows like Dickinson and The Great, rattling a new narrative from the bare bones of historical fact, with an impish modern tone that brushes off the bonds of reality.

My Lady Jane purports to be a feminist reimagining of "the ultimate damsel in distress," one that empowers her to rewrite her own narrative as one of triumph rather than tragedy. To an extent, it succeeds.

Unfortunate humour aside, the swords and sorcery side of things is surprisingly fun, and there’s a quirky kind of charm to be found in a series that defies any attempt to take it seriously.
