⭐ Today in our #FounderFandom Series where we introduce the 12 impact-focused founders and startups that make up the 4th cohort of the Denver-based 2024 Techstars Workforce Development Accelerator led by Dave Cass & Sasha Green, we’re spotlighting Welfie! 🏥 Welfie builds and empowers the healthcare workforce of the future with a culturally responsive, AI-driven platform that gives underserved youth the skills and tools they need for well-paying medical jobs in the communities they come from. Welfie was founded by Steven Moyo, MD, a Black immigrant doctor who was tired of seeing patients who looked like him die sicker and younger. As a young volunteer doctor overseas where doctors were few and community health workers provided the bulk of medical services, he realized the importance of health solutions that were by and for the communities they served. Dr. Moyo is joined in his mission by CTO Lakshmin Bangaru, the former head of Data Science and Engineering for Yahoo, and CMO Susan McLennan, an Emmy Award-winning content creator whose work has been selected for inclusion in The Library of Congress. Welfie is based in San Diego, CA. 🏆 #RecentWins In 2024, Welfie has won more than $1M in grants, including from the Government of California and the Conrad Prebys Foundation, an Anthem Webby Award, and a Gold Stevie Award (American Business Award). 🚀 How to keep up with Welfie? ⭐ Today in our #FounderFandom Series where we introduce the 12 impact-focused founders and startups that make up the 4th cohort of the Denver-based 2024 Techstars Workforce Development Accelerator led by Dave Cass & Sasha Green, we’re spotlighting Fathom PBC! 🕸 Fathom PBC makes it easy for workforce organizations to find, employ, and track talent in the world of work. Co-founded by CEO JoAdel Adeola, Chief Impact Officer Julie Dunlap and CTO John Morales-Marquez, Fathom provides a talent management platform that automates data verification so workforce providers can spend more time with their clients and less time on compliance. The team discovered the market opportunity via participation in the National Science Foundation’s I-Corps program, where they conducted commercial research to learn how technology could leverage the public workforce system to address national workforce development challenges. They found that workforce providers nationwide were spending a third of their time collecting, validating, and reporting client data. 🏆 #RecentWins With Techstars and Georgia Tech’s South Big Data Hub funding, Fathom will pilot its mobile workforce wallet and web-based manager dashboard with American Job Centers this summer. The pilots will demonstrate the platform’s ability to save valuable time while reducing costs for workforce agencies. 🚀 How to keep up with Fathom PBC? The 2024 cohort has successfully wrapped up mentor madness week, clocking over 750 total mentoring sessions! 🤯 💪 A HUGE thank you to all of our mentors for participating! ✨ Mentor Testimonials ✨ 💚 "My favorite days are the ones spent collaborating with big picture thinkers, dreamers, and doers who step up to solve complex problems and strive to make the world a better place." -Charlotte Creech 💚 "I am about to jump into a 6-hour meeting for Techstars Workforce Development Accelerator Mentor Madness. What will I get out of it? The fulfillment gained from giving first and giving back, learning about amazing new companies that will have a positive impact in the world, and forming amazing new connections. Not to mention expanding my knowledge of industries, challenges, and opportunities." - ✨Shannon P. 💡Founder Testimonials💡 💚 "Right now, we are finding what is called “product-market fit” and the conversations I enjoyed most were with mentors who helped me understand how to refine our current offering and potential avenues for sales in the future." - Tori Bell 💚 "Mentor Madness was not just about gaining insights; it was an intense exercise in endurance and adaptability. The back-to-back meetings tested our mental stamina and forced us to process a vast amount of feedback quickly. This intensity built our resilience and prepared us for high-pressure situations." - Sam (Saman) Akhtar 💚 "While our goal was to establish our mentor team for Techstars, we also built a coalition of supporters, funders, and partners. Many mentors offered to introduce us to investors, customers, and strategic partners." - JoAdel Adeola 💚 "I’m on a multi-week trip across Vietnam while participating in Mentor Madness with a 13-hour time zone difference. Balancing these experiences isn’t easy, but it’s teaching me the power of “both/and” thinking (in comparison to "either/or" thinking). Running a disability tech startup like Flexspeak demands this kind of flexibility and openness. We can’t afford to see the world in black and white. Our users, our team, and our mission thrive in the gray areas where diverse needs and ideas converge." - Alan Vu #mentorship #givefirst #mentormagic #mentormadness #workforcedevelopment #techstars

💭 Some brilliant Thought Leadership from one of our remarkable Techstars Workforce Development Accelerator Founders, Tori Bell of Inclusion Unpacked (Techstars '24). Read more about Tori's journey from Meta to Techstars & how founding "Black Women at Meta" ultimately inspired her to found her own company centered around the Future of Work. #Techstars #WorkforceDevelopment #Accelerator #Founders #Startups #Impact #BetterforFounders #GiveFirst #FutureofWorkisFractional 🌟
Many don’t know this about me, but I founded the global employee resource group “Black Women at Meta” and scaled that community to over 3,000 members during my time there. My experience leading Black Women at Meta was a journey of learning and growth. Like many #ERG leaders, I had to balance my core responsibilities with leading the community. There were days when one took precedence over the other, and I had to navigate this dynamic with my manager. This experience taught me the value of collaboration and alignment with internal leaders like Ebele Okobi at the time to achieve our goals. The needs of ERG leaders are incredibly nuanced. At the end of my tenure, I worked alongside a coach who helped me better manage my priorities and showcase the impact of our work on leadership. Over 90% of Fortune 500 companies have ERGs and ERG leaders who undoubtedly face the same landscape as me. ERG leaders are at the front lines of culture and inclusion for many organizations, yet most need coaching and support to lead their communities like I did. I founded Inclusion Unpacked (Techstars '24) to enable leaders founders who face the task of ensuring they’re building inclusive cultures to internal leaders to access inclusion experts, resources, and tools to allow them to focus on their roles with the support of an expert provider network on demand. If you are an ERG leader, I’d love to chat! Send me a DM or comment on your experience below.
