We still have a lot of work to do to build inclusive environments for fans- despite the fact that half of gamers are women, 64% of female gamers are worried about bullying and harassment in gaming environments and 49% have experienced harassment directly. Thankfully many brands in fandom are working to make imagined worlds more welcoming. I loved talking with Susan Jurevics and Jaap O. Tuinman about the incredible work they're doing to build inclusive features and stories at Audible and PlayStation. At Fandom, every fan is welcome and embraced in our communities- our core purpose is to ensure that empowering games and stories reach and connect fans around the world. Every marketer has a calendar full of conferences and events- we present and get presented to constantly. So it was amazing to take the time to Unwind at the WPP Stream UNconference with old and new friends. Getting out of my comfort zone for Ignite (4 min share out of a passion point, 15 slides, 15 sec per slide and no control!), joining thought provoking conversations around efficiency, structure, and AI with fellow marketers and judging (an incredible) cook off were highlights. We've officially entered the era of content efficiency in the streaming wars. We started with the customer acquisition race, then to retention focus and then to the realization that even if you got both of those right, the high content development costs made it almost impossible to build a sustainable and profitable business. This has forced a shift from cost-agnostic content piling to a strategic view of the right content mix to meet subscriber needs at the right price. But licensed content is only valuable if it meets the needs of your fans- buyers need to find that right mix and sellers need to find the right value. CES is one of my favorite events- seeing (and touching and hearing) so much technological innovation and thinking about all of the applications and implications for streaming and gaming is the most inspiring way to start the year.
